First, the good. The hotel is lovely with beautiful grounds, so a great location for a romantic stay with lovely walks. We stayed there for two nights to celebrate our anniversary and were able to take our dogs. We had a charming ground floor room with a four-poster bed, a big lounge area and a door outside, which was very handy for the dogs. They were treated well too, with beds, food and water bowls, poo bags, some dog food and treats - and even their own bottles of mineral water.
None of this came cheap. As it was a special occasion we were prepared to splash out a bit but the charges for the dogs were an eye-watering charge of £30 per animal per night. But we thought it would be worth it as it had been highly recommended by friends with discerning taste.
There were some things that let it down. I'll review the restaurant (a Michelin star restaurant) separately but an example of it as a hotel restaurant is that I had boiled eggs the first morning and they were completely undercooked. One of the waiters was unfriendly to the point of being rude and acted as though it was beneath him to answer us if we spoke to him or asked a question about the wine. We had a package that included a glass of prosecco each before dinner on both nights. The first night the...First, the good. One of the waiters was unfriendly to the point of being rude and acted as though it was beneath him to answer us if we spoke to him or asked a question about the wine. We had a package that included a glass of prosecco each before dinner on both nights. The first night the prosecco was warm and flat but the person who had served us in the lounge bar disappeared and we didn't see him again before we were shown to our table. When we mentioned it the second night (the prosecco was cold and still had bubbles that time), he more or less said that it shouldn't have been as it was in an ice bucket. No apology or even acknowledgement that we had not enjoyed it; he left us with the impression that we were wrong.
On the whole, we enjoyed our stay but it's not somewhere I would want to go to again.More
