“Steam train broken on our day - but still a nice day out.”

Owner description: Heritage Railway operating Steam and Diesel trains between Tunbridge Wells West and Eridge with intermediate stations at High Rocks and Groombridge.
Reviewed 29 June 2018

We got a Virgin Experience Day which included afternoon tea at a hotel and a spa valley rail journey.
We were hoping to get on the steam train at least once for one of the journeys but unfortunately the steam train had broken and was being repaired so we only got to ride the diesel train which was annoying but we made the best of it.
Nice train ride (about 20mins long each way) seeing parts of the countryside and the train buffet cart is good value (i think it was about £7.00 for 2 crisps, a muffin and 2 drinks).
Friendly staff, authentic looking stations and beautiful country side. Wasn't too busy either and we had our own compartment (in first class seating). Quite romantic!

We went on the Steam train, it was a 5 mile journey and stopped at 3 stations, High Rocks, Groombridge and Eridge. We got off at Groombridge and had just over a 2 hour stay there until the train came back, there was a pub where we had a very welcome drink but there was nothing else about. At Eridge station we did the same thing, and again there was only a pub, but all 3 stations were beautifully kept and the station staff and Spa Valley staff were only too happy to give you information about the stations and the trains. We had a great time, it was a beautiful sunny day so we were very lucky, but had it been cold or wet it wouldnt have been so good.

I bought a ticket for a train ride. I received a train ride. Therefore the Spa Valley Railway met all its contractual obligations.

The volunteers really care about this Railway. They are helpful and smart and the carriage we travelled in was clean and comfortable. But if you are bringing a group- there were 44 of us- you should know that it is very hard to contact staff. Replies to emails are slow and three times in our experience did not materialise at all. Plus - as for many others it seems - the promised steam train did not turn up. A real let down for our group.

Thank you for your review and feedback about our carriages and how our volunteers do care about our railway. Please can you contact me directly on jonnie.wesson@spavalleyrailway.co.uk as I would like to resolve the issue regarding a lack of communication. Our Customer Service system is monitored regularly so I am surprised to hear you didn't receive as efficient communication as you should have done.

We apologise for the lack of steam on the day of your visit, this was due to a fault which could not be rectified in time for the services. We need more volunteers to help our steam engines to keep on chuffing, if you know of anyone then please do get in touch with us!
