We called in here on our way home from a short break in Ambleside. We enjoyed a snack in the cafe and as we are NT members we thought we would have a wander round the gardens. We then noticed that there was a guided tour, highlighting how the building had changed over time and decided to join that. It turned out that we were the only takers and so we had a very personalised tour. Many thanks to the very knowledgeable guide who took us round. We learned a lot!

Visited Sizergh Castle as a couple.

First the bad: Park End Moss Nature reserve - something the NT estate is proud of. Can you find it? Very much doubt it. Starts badly with lady on reception stating: “map is not good, a lot of people struggle” ......... anyway we give it a go (about a 1hr 30 minute round trip walk) and boy was she not kidding. Map sends you down the wrong path, no signs where you can see them. Met other couple equally lost. Finally got told where it was by couple who stated that maps and directions are worse than useless. Well done Sizergh NT!

Then the good: even though it was November a walk through the gardens was great - well maintained, interesting, ground staff happy to talk and give you insight - very enjoyable (even in the rain).

So a VERY mixed bag: Awful and very good.

A wonderful "castle" well kept and with a homely feeling reflecting the fact that the Strickland family still live there. Many unique features to enjoy. Gardens and grounds give families of all ages somewhere to explore whatever the season.

Sizergh Castle and Garden is another great little garden and historic house within the National Trust portfolio.

The house is interesting and the rock garden with its ferns and colourful Japanese maples is stunning, even on a rainy day!

The site also offers great facilities - ample parking, a shop and a cafe!

This medieval house is home to the Strickland family as still has a lived in feel. There are also gardens to enjoy, a delightful rock garden, collection of hardy ferns, and a new stumpery.
