I have visited this Museum many times over the past few years with my ‘London daughter and her two daughters ‘. And it has so much to offer; a terrific shop, a fascinating aquarium, exhibits of exotic animals, a large room with musical instruments, and lots of interactive opportunities. There are also story-telling events at certain designated times where the children are encouraged to become involved by the splendid storytellers who create such excitement. There is also a very good restaurant catering for adults and children with seating without as well as within. The grounds are also splendid with much variety - beautiful herb gardens, plants for dyes, areas where children can run around, a corner where children can have fun making percussion music, and an enclosure with lots of animals including alpacas. This is a splendid place for a family day out.
Hi David, thank you for this great review. We're so glad to hear you had such a lovely day out.
Beautiful representation of animal internal and external bodies, even the music gallery has a good collection of past and present instruments.
Unfortunately the robot zoo and the centenary gallery were closed.
Very easy to reach by overground or bus, completely free a part of the aquarium and butterfly galleries.
Nice place to bring kinds.
Don't forget to visit the garden!
Maybe the area needs a 'modern museum'? I say this because Hornimans has lost it's charm completely. I used to visit this museum over 30yrs ago as a child and some things have not changed like the area with the stuffed animals which represent good education.
But the rest of the place is poor. With the gentrification of the area it seems apt that they feel paid tickets for the 'cool' areas is justified. It's not and simply takes advantage of it's proximity, holiday time and parents need to take their children to the 'robot' exhibition.
A modern museum is not what is needed, just a new museum with charm, a better smell throughout and somewhere when you walk in you can smile as well!
We’re sorry you did not enjoy your visit to the Horniman recently. Two of our galleries are currently being refurbished and will re-open in 2018- we hope you’ll come back and will find them to be a welcome new take on our anthropology collection.
I was very disappointed - we went to the animal robot exhibition which was very expensive for what it was. It was sold as robotic animals showing you how animals moved - but it didn't. The animals moved a bit but not in any useful way and the posters beside the exhibits were way too detailed for children under 12. Staff told us the wrong prices. The gardens were OK but then London has a lot of these. The bees were OK. Won't be going there again!
We’re sorry you were disappointed in your visit to the Robot Zoo and that you had been given incorrect pricing information. We hope that you will consider to return and explore one of our new exhibitions in the future.
We went here on recommendation, and quite enjoyed the museum, but it was crowded with little children, who made an enormous amount of sounds... The Robot and aquarium were not interesting enough for our teenaged kids..🤖
We’re glad to hear that you enjoyed your visit to the Horniman. We are indeed a very popular destination for visitors of all ages, and it can sometimes get busy – often it is quieter to visit later in the day during the week, or first thing on Sunday mornings. We hope to see you again soon.
Great place to take children with enquiring minds.
Museum is FREE but you pay for exhibitions. Butterfly House is very good and is time slotted. Museum is well organised in sections of either animal groups or animal functions (diggers/ protective shells/ misdirection/ etc.).
Ground floor has all types of stuffed animals and birds including a rather imposing Walrus and also has a "kids learn and play area". The upper floor is dedicated mainly to Geological fossils all through the ages and a fantastically large Cuckoo Clock. Several exhibitions, some of which were closed at the time, are dotted around the place. The Aquarium is not massive but well presented with several worldwide location scenarios, which also includes frogs toads, etc.
The differing gardens and picnic areas are spacious and include a café, snack hut and kids playground. Great views over London from up here. There is also an area for kids to see Farm animals.
The only downside I would think would be the lack of Parking for Able bodied people, as there are a few spots for Disabled parking. Parking in the Local area can be a bit hit and miss. But since I arrived on the Overground at Forest Hill and walked to the Museum (3/4 mile) on a sunny day, I had no worries.
Overall, Great on a warm sunny day outside and very useful when its raining in the Museum area. Allow a minimum 2-3 hrs quick visit or longer for a relaxing day.
Thank you Alex, we're very grateful you took the time out for this review. We're so glad you're such a fan too!
