“Has grown larger but lost its identity”

The annual design fair 100% Design at Olympia has grown in size since it started a few years ago, but in doing so has lost the focus and edge. Perhaps there are now too many of these shows and many of the innovations of past years have become commonplace, especially in the world of office design.

The Chinese are still starring, with their combination of tradition and contemporary design and this year there is also a stand showing work by Slovenian designers.
There are interesting centrepieces such as 'Elements' by Max Fraser which, focuses on the detail of new and old designs, and new talent which is diverse, including digital clocks made out of old valve radios and the like. I want one! Plus wooden bicycles, some links with street art, a cool wine cooler from a car body, then a gin trolley. Yipee!

Lastly, technology is there - apparently more and more clients (of a younger generation) are asking for virtual reality experiences of projects before they commit

100% Design claims to be the largest and longest running design trade event for industry professionals in the UK. For professionals who visit other design events such as the Orgatec in Cologne or the show in Milan this is a small one, it only takes a few hours to walk through it.
Having visited 100% Design regularly since the first time in 1995 I have seen it go through changes, the latest one being the move from Earls Court to Olympia. I expected it to expand and exhibit some more contemporary design from companies and individuals. In my opinion this is not the case and the fair was disappointing this year 2016. Maybe it is because more competition from other venues during London Design Week, Tent London and Design Junction both of which have attracted exhibitors of the kind that used to be at 100% Design, or perhaps it can not cope with Olympia which requires design approach different from Earls Court. Anyway, as one part of many at London Design Week !00% Design was OK but as stand-alone event it can do with some improvement. Hopefully this will be seen next year. I will be there - because visiting 100% Design still makes a great excuse for jumping on a plain and spending a few good days in London :-)

Great exhibition of a wide range of contemporary design, including a section on new designers, but in its new venue over two floors it has become too large and the flow from one section to the other is confusing, although they try with changes in carpet colours.

First time to 100%Design, enjoyed it very much.
Pavilions radiating around a DJ Set centre spot.
Eclectic selection of designers: established main stream brands and “emerging” new creative businesses.
Italians go separately as usual, do not invest in the Made in Italy Brand, but this is another story!
The event was sponsored by Turkishceramics!
