When visiting Whitby, the climb up the 199 steps is a must, beautiful views and not too bad if you take your time. My 3 year old managed the climb easily.

Steps! There are 199 of em. Sounds like a lot but it's really not too bad as the steps are wide and shallow. They're some rest points on the way to take a breather if you want. Take the steps to go up and see the Abbey. See a lot of 5 stars but I can't get too excited. It's steps. Nothing particularly exciting really.

We actually went up by the Caedmon's Trod path and wish we had used it to come down to. I have been up and down these steps many times over the years but now with vertigo and age not on my side, I was so slow coming down. The steps are not difficult but monotonous and I could see over the side which didn't help. I'd also had some beer at the brewery which didn't help! It is a wonderful view and something you must do when you visit Whitby.

We walked the steps very early on a glorious sunny morning. Almost empty and plenty of time to take in the views on the way up. The views from the top are amazing.

The steps are not very high and although there are 199 of them it is not as bad as it looks! There are seats part way up and it is well worth it for the amazing views at the top. I also recommend stopping at the YHA cafe in the grounds of the Abbey when you get up there...very reasonably priced and lovely food without having to pay to get in the Abbey!
