Description: Welcome to the Whippet Inn, York's best Steak and Alehouse. We have now been open for just over 3 years and very proud to have marked the occasion by winning 'Best Restaurant ' in the Visit York Tourism Awards for the second time in 2016. Over the years we have raised a few eyebrows with our name, and many have said that our interior is certainly quirky if not a little risqué, all of which we love as we want to be unique and fun. When it comes to the food and drinks we serve however; we are very serious... When we set about creating The Whippet Inn our main aim was to get the best food produce we could find in Yorkshire and then pair it with real ales, lagers, spirits and wines from around Great Britain. Fantastic beef is our thing, offering you a huge range of breeds, cuts & ageing. Our A la carte menu has a huge variety of meat, fish & vegetarian dishes- so there is really something for everyone! We are open from Midday everyday serving our lunch & a lite bite menu alongside the A la carte or Sunday Menu. Our bar is an eclectic mix of Real Yorkshire Ales - right through to over 40 different gins- we maybe small but we have used every nook and cranny to ensure we have an amazing range to offer our quests. All this is delivered with down to earth homely Yorkshire hospitality. Our home from home is adult dining only, so we do hope that if you have children & find yourself with a babysitter for the night- you will take the chance to come & join us!

Visited on the evening of 19th November for a meal. The food was delicious, well presented, reasonably priced but could have been served a little hotter. Very well flavoured though & a good size portion. The banana cake & peanut butter cream was heavenly. Good selection of Gin, staff were very knowledgable about which to recommend based on personal tastes, and very pleasant & friendly too. Would definitely recommend a visit.

Disappointingly reality didn't meet our expectations. This is an old small cramped pub now operating as a restaurant. We all chose the 3 course lunch, maybe that was the problem as the a la carte dishes are a lot more expensive & staff expect people to pay for the more expensive items.rather than choose from the set menus. Service was very friendly but came with a rather cavalier attitude & a lack of attention & detail. A starter came without the goats cheese, roasts came with one carrot & was all rather sparse & a let down, not the WOW we were expecting. A desert of strawberries & cream came as a strawberry panacotta from the main menu. We were sat right up to the old bar, tables are very close together & cramped, a glass was smashed on the bar which shattered onto the back of one of us. The lack of goats cheese was mentioned to the waiter who gave a rather weak apology, but no offer of a reduction. I feel they need to up their game & pay more attention to ensuring guests are looked after properly, Maybe if you choose the expensive steak choices this is the case.

Rather isolated on a commercial road in the centre of York. Don’t let this put you off.

Spotlessly clean and quaint on the inside. Our waiter was very knowledgable and humorous.

The Sunday lunch menu is short with three starters, roast dinner and three desserts but there is also an a-la-carte menu

I had steak - one of the best ever. My wife had Roast Beef - one of the best she has ever had. £23 for a 3 course Sunday Lunch.

We had a lovely bottle of Australian Shiraz and at £20 thought it was good value.

The desserts were ok but did not live up to the standard of the main. Not to say they were bad in any way, just that the main course was so good.

Parking can also be an issue but you would expect that in the centre of York.

Book a table and enjoy!!

Our family had dinner here on a recommendation from our hotel - and boy were we glad for the recommendation.

Do get there a little early and have a drink in the snug. The barman mixes fantastic gin cocktails and even managed to get my husband to not only try gin but he enjoyed it. A really big election of gin so we just handed the decision making over to the barman and he did not disappoint not only with the drinks but his engaging conversation on the different types of gins, their provenance etc.

Onto dinner where we decided to share the chateaubriand - this time on the recommendation of the waitress. Beautiful perfectly cooked meat and a great array of sides - all absolutely delicious. It was great to have the opportunity to share this as a family.

Can't recommend the place highly enough.
