Description: Welcome to the Whippet Inn, York's best Steak and Alehouse. We have now been open for just over 3 years and very proud to have marked the occasion by winning 'Best Restaurant ' in the Visit York Tourism Awards for the second time in 2016. Over the years we have raised a few eyebrows with our name, and many have said that our interior is certainly quirky if not a little risqué, all of which we love as we want to be unique and fun. When it comes to the food and drinks we serve however; we are very serious... When we set about creating The Whippet Inn our main aim was to get the best food produce we could find in Yorkshire and then pair it with real ales, lagers, spirits and wines from around Great Britain. Fantastic beef is our thing, offering you a huge range of breeds, cuts & ageing. Our A la carte menu has a huge variety of meat, fish & vegetarian dishes- so there is really something for everyone! We are open from Midday everyday serving our lunch & a lite bite menu alongside the A la carte or Sunday Menu. Our bar is an eclectic mix of Real Yorkshire Ales - right through to over 40 different gins- we maybe small but we have used every nook and cranny to ensure we have an amazing range to offer our quests. All this is delivered with down to earth homely Yorkshire hospitality. Our home from home is adult dining only, so we do hope that if you have children & find yourself with a babysitter for the night- you will take the chance to come & join us!

Ok, been going to York for the past twenty years and tried most of the restaurants and bars, and often ask the local bar staff/ locals where to eat, and was recommended the Whippet steak house and Bar
Overall it is a nice place and decent food but shame about the prices, steaks are cooked well, however small, if you are a meat lover like me, and very pricey, 8oz sirloin £22
Looking at the specials board it had a T bone steak 19-22 Ounces at £47 -yes that is for one ! will not be going again due to the highly inflated prices and lets face it its not hard to cook a steak , plenty of other places where I could get a fillet for the same price as a sirloin than here, seems like they are trying to push the place upmarket with high prices to boot, save your money there are plenty of other places to get a steak in York without the inflated prices

Sunday lunch is good value for money but would be even better if the portion size was consistent on our table and between the table next to us.
Although the food was delicious the roast beef portions were not the same, Some of us had 2 decent slices of well done, while if you had the pink beef you were only given one slice.
The same has to be said for the desserts which we ordered which were substantially smaller than the table next to us , therefore we did complain at this point and the waiter did come back and apologise that the chef had run out. He did take them off the bill and gave us a free drink and was honest. But feel that there was no excuse of the variations with the main course.
Having been before we knew the venue was good and the service is always spot on.
We still would go back again as it was all delicious!

Visited on the evening of 19th November for a meal. The food was delicious, well presented, reasonably priced but could have been served a little hotter. Very well flavoured though & a good size portion. The banana cake & peanut butter cream was heavenly. Good selection of Gin, staff were very knowledgable about which to recommend based on personal tastes, and very pleasant & friendly too. Would definitely recommend a visit.

Disappointingly reality didn't meet our expectations. This is an old small cramped pub now operating as a restaurant. We all chose the 3 course lunch, maybe that was the problem as the a la carte dishes are a lot more expensive & staff expect people to pay for the more expensive items.rather than choose from the set menus. Service was very friendly but came with a rather cavalier attitude & a lack of attention & detail. A starter came without the goats cheese, roasts came with one carrot & was all rather sparse & a let down, not the WOW we were expecting. A desert of strawberries & cream came as a strawberry panacotta from the main menu. We were sat right up to the old bar, tables are very close together & cramped, a glass was smashed on the bar which shattered onto the back of one of us. The lack of goats cheese was mentioned to the waiter who gave a rather weak apology, but no offer of a reduction. I feel they need to up their game & pay more attention to ensuring guests are looked after properly, Maybe if you choose the expensive steak choices this is the case.
