We wanted somewhere within easy reach of the bus station and near museums and galleries.Victoria House fills the bill excellently if you are planning a short trip and want somewhere central as we did.The rail station is quite near too so it is great for anyone arriving on public transport .
It is worth mentioning that there is quite a steep flight of stairs up to reception and we did not see a lift.
Our room was small and clean with good bedding and seemed freshly decorated.Don't expect anything but a bed and a television - no chair or bedside tables but the windows open and I assume the heating would work so it is fine for maybe a couple of nights if you plan to be out most of the time. The room was quiet even though the hotel is on a main street.
The bathroom is fine with quite nice toiletries but the tap pressure is very high at least it was in our basin and gushes out over the floor if you don't turn it on very gently. We learned from experience.
We did not try the breakfast but there is a kettle etc in the room.
Highly recommended for a short stay.

when the description says "active street" or words to those effect--be ware! Windows with no screens, no A/C, hot days (and nights) and party street. Once they opened it after hours then the motorcycles and trash trucks start. Don't expect any sleep (I suppose if you stagger in then the noisy may not matter). Although you are given a key to the front door for after hours--the door does not lock. To close (and lock) your room door requires slamming the door--it does not pull to close--it slams (as do all the other rooms on the floor as well).

The bathroom and room were clean--if Spartan.

The description and photos do not do this property justice--one cannot imagine arriving at the actual reality of this property given what is posted.

We (my sister had a separate room with a worse experience) left early--i don't think i have ever actually checked out of a property early before. The owners were not surprised--this mistake must happen often when actual adults (not elderly but adult) check in.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms on the street--i cannot speak to the two rooms on the back side.

Arrived at 1am after travelling down from Glasgow by car. There is an underground car park in Gloucester Street which is a short walk from the hotel, but it didn't appear to be open when we arrived despite saying it was 24-hours on the map. However there is another open air car park just round the corner a 3-min walk away.

The entrance hall isn't particularly appealing but it's not that bad either. Reception is 24-hours, which means a guy sleeping in a duvet on the floor in the small reception room.

He handed over the key before returning to his scratcher. The room was on the same level at the end of the short corridor, with a couple of steps down into the room.

The room itself was moderately proportioned and clean enough (despite some other reviews saying it was dirty). The bathroom is actually quite nice with good tiling on the walls. The tap is pretty keen though and too strong a movement will see you soaked with water,

Sleep quality was not too bad althought it was very warm in the room and there was no A/C or ceiling fan. The bed as also too soft for my liking and was a standard double-sized bed which I find too small being accustomed to a King Size at home and at least Queen or King in hotels.

Check out was a matter of handing the key over as room was prepaid. No questions asked about quality of stay, etc.

All in all, it served the purpose for a one-night stay but at £75 it is poor value, albeit about the cheapest hotel you will find in Oxford. Definitely not one for a long-term stay but perhaps not as bad as many of the other reviews make out.

Needing to stay just one night in Oxford I found the Victoria house hotel was the ideal location being central and only ten minutes walk from the rail station. Being situated on such a busy street its front glass door is is squeezed in between bars and restaurants so not very impressive. When I first stepped in through the door I was a bit worried as a very sour smell hit me, a smell like cat urine? Up a flight of stairs and I came to the reception. The man on the desk was very friendly and most helpful and I was in my room very quickly. The room was of a good standard with a nice bathroom with a shower cabinet. The tv located high up the wall was not good with a constant distortion of interference so pretty useless. The worst thing was the noise from the street and from the toilet flushing from the room above roaring through mine. The location of the hotel was right along from a great restaurant, 4 candles. Otherwise the hotel was okay but a bit expensive and glad it was only one night.
