Came for a day trip to oxford and as it was a rainy day went for the castle tour and enjoyed our impromptu visit. Our tour guide, Marshall William Smith gave us the full varied history of the castle in an hour tour. Good value for money, even though we thought we knew a lot about the history we both learnt something new. The tour guide involves you as much or as little as you like. The tour includes a little climb up to the top of the tower and down into the crypt as well as a tour of the prison. And includes a trip up to mound to see the sights of oxford. Well worth a visit

We had been staying in the hotel which makes up part of this old prison over a weekend stay in Oxford, staying in one of their cell rooms, so we thought it would be a great idea to learn more about the Castle and old prison on one of the tours. We pre-booked our tickets and met up with our tour guide, a young man protraying the character of one of the former prisoners by the name of Rowland Jenkes, who had been imprisoned for being "saucy and foul-mouthed" about Queen Elizabeth I. The tour was excellent, taking us up to the top of St George's tour for great views over Oxford, and down into the crypt. We saw some of the old prison cells and heard really interesting stories about the prisoners, some funny. some scary and some downright gruesome. Our guide was very good and we had a really fun tour with him.

We went to visit Oxford castle a few months back to do some sightseeing with friends. We decided to opt for the tour, which was pretty pricey if you're in a group. The tour was however very educational and fun, you go to the top of a steep tower at one point for some great views.

The tour continued into the depths of the castle prison and also through the cells. With purchasing tour tickets you are also entitled to go up the mound, which is an amazing unique experience to do in the heart of such a busy city, the juxtaposition is unreal.

A must go for anyone in the Oxford area.

I visited the castle on a sunday and arrived at 10.30am. You can only access the castle via a guided tour I think for safety, and maybe because it's kinda small. The next avalible tour was 12noon. On hindsight I should have maybe prebooked. But the time was fine for me. I just spent to time looking around the city. The price is £10.50 that's for the hour guided tour , the prison exhibition at the end and the mound that is opposite. The mound on it's own is £1 per person which is a bit of fun and has a great view of the castle and the spires in the distance. Of course very steep but worth the climb!
The tour lasts about an hour our guide was Peter who was in character and gave lots of facts and stories along the way. You start by going up the turet and stop half way up the tower to view a room. When you reach the top, Peter gave plenty of time for photos and selfies! We also visited the vaults and then the prison cells themselves. You finish the tour with an exhibition and time line of the castle and it s use.
if you want a traditional castle experience. you should be warned the tour is mainly based on the castle being used as a prison and not a castle in the traditional sense. It was much better than I expected. really fun and informative and the whole staff at the castle were really friendly and helpful. I would highly recommend!
