Friendly enthusiatic staff. A special treat was to talk to the man who was grinding the swords for use at special occasions

Best Industrial-age working factory I have ever seen. Must be at least 90% complete. Everything from power generation to raw materials to machinery to work in progress to the finished goods is there, to be seen. Absolutely fantastic. If you like steel and coal and steam machinery, this is a must see.
One of the best historical experiences I have had in the UK, highly recommended.

Definitely worth the entrance fee if you are interested in how things used to be, back in the day. Lots to see and well laid out. Would be a shame to see it fall further in to disrepair. Crying out for more funding to preserve a little treasure.

As we were going to visit the area, had a look at what there was to see and came across this factory museum. Decided to visit and were very pleasantly surprised. Only £4 for adults, great value and for a very good cause. The factory consists of several buildings, all look as though they have just been vacated and the doors shut. Everything appears genuine and original and I'm sure it is. A very interesting insight into times gone by. The visitors centre is modern and has a cafe and shop and clean toilets. Would definitely recommend a visit.

This lovely museum is housed in the original buildings. You can visit workers' cottages, the water wheel (it turns on a Wednesday), workshops where steel was produced in a crucible furnace and the areas where men produced and sharpened knives and scythes - and where women painted and wrapped them. There are always volunteer guides on hand to tell you more. The first stop is a very helpful introduction to the site and to steelmaking, with a short video that brings it to life.
