We found Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet on Trip Advisor whilst looking for things to do in the area on a passing trip. It is definitely worth a visit! My Husband had done a forge day experience elsewhere earlier in the week (with David Stephenson in Lockton :-)) so he really enjoyed the whole thing. The majority is outside so make sure you are dressed for the weather! Unfortunately a couple of areas were closed due to snow underfoot & stone steps but it didn't detract from the visit overly much. It cost us £10.20 for entry for 2 & 2 drinks :-) Really interesting place to spend an hour or two. Would be great if there could be guided tours of the grounds to give us further & more in-depth information.

After visiting the Christmas Market in downtown Sheffield on a cold and rainy day, we drove to this historical site to spend several enjoyable hours. We had a nice lunch in the coffee shop with sandwiches and coffee served by friendly people, and then went to tour the Hamlet. This was just up our alley as the steel industry has been prominent in our home area, and this showed us the parallel development in England. The buildings have been lovingly preserved, the signs explain the significance of the artifacts on display, and even in the rain, it was a delightful and informative stop (except for the little boy who kept poking my wife with his umbrella until his father finally stopped him). It was nice to be able to take a leisurely tour where docents would check to see if we had questions sporadically, but left us alone to tour at our own pace the rest of the time. The fact that this location includes the business office, the housing for workers and the manager, and the various shops makes this a complete educational experience. We are so glad we included this in our itinerary.

It has been awhile since I have been here and having been again it was worth while.
Some of the workshops date from the 18th Century, arranged around the edges with water dam to the south, which was used and still is used to power the water wheels, I think that there are at least 3.
The staff that work the site are enthusiastic and informative and will entertain the young people and answer their questions.
It is interesting to see who people used to work, and important to keep it going.

Allmost a cottage industry, compact site, with original workshops,in a square, around the green and the workers cottages as you come in.It shows what 19th centuary life was like,no health and safety.Very nice cafe order a snack sandwiches etc as you pay the very cheap entrance fee.As it was December, there was only guide,Nicholas who was very helpful.Enjoyable visit
