Room 9 in the gatehouse sounded lovely with its amazing view and character. Having finally found parking nearby we checked in only to establish that both the bar and recommended restaurant were closed on Tuesday and Wednesday. The old stone spiral staircase to our room was littered with dirty laundry which was quickly removed. Wow what a fabulous room albeit accessing the adjacent bathroom was rather disconcerting during the night. Elation was short lived however, on closer inspection the room was extemely dusty on most surfaces and obviously had not been cleaned thoroughly for some time. As no staff were available after 6pm the situation couldn't be rectified. We left without breakfast the following morning bitterly dissapointed. Two e.mails have been sent to the hotel expressing our dissatisfaction but received no response. Such a potentially lovely room and hotel which obviously relies on its location rather than customer service and attention to detail.

We booked this hotel the night before our stay in Well, so there wasn't much choice but we weren't disappointed. We stayed in Room 2 which had a four poster bed and looked out onto the street at the front. It was clean and comfortable, the shower was good with plenty of hot water. Everything was adequate, but it was very warm in the night even with the windows open, it would have been good to have had a fan, but the reception desk is not manned once the restaurant downstairs closes. Our booking stated that checkout was by 11am, but someone knocked our door at 10am to see if we'd left which was a little odd.
We would definately stay here again, but would ask for a room with a cathedral view next time.

The food was AMAZING. I've never had such deliciously cooked lamb. The team were friendly and polite, and made sure that the whole party ran smoothly. Nick was hugely helpful providing advice on what would be best to eat, and set up the event with no fuss or bother whatsoever. You will definitely get 5* service here 11/10 I'd definitely book again!

Nice meal but limited menu, did not cater for children with a menu so had to ask and they can have small portions on some meals but for a Five year old a small portion was £8.50 crazy money, no children’s drinks or desert. It was way over priced for basic Italian, scruffy setting and then over £12 added to our bill for service after a very expensive meal disappointing. Does not cater for families.

Really enjoyed our stay, only one night but would have loved to have stayed longer. The room above the gatehouse, room 9, is a stunning room with a quirky but modern bathroom. The bed was extremely comfortable and a sturdy four poster, not a cheap imitation. The decor is gorgeous and the view is divine. I have mobility issues and the hotel did warn us, but decided to take the room. Yes it is up some old stone spiral steps, but with the handrail I managed fine. The steps from the room to the bathroom need a bit of practice, but we’ll worth it to stay in such a beautiful room. Breakfast was really delicious, with lots of choice. The staff were all really accommodating, welcoming and friendly. We checked in early, and left our luggage to explore Wells, when we came back all was already in the room, despite them being really busy serving lunch. We stayed during the heatwave and a Pimms overlooking the green was quintessentially English. Highly recommended.

Room tip: Parking is some way from the hotel, but can drop off and pick up luggage either by asking in pub opposite, or if quick in lay-by nearby.
