What a lucky find!
We needed to stay in Bury St Edmunds at short notice, and this was inexplicably one of the few hotels with vacancies. But we're so glad we found The Chantry. It even has free on-site parking.
We used the downstairs annex room, with its separate sitting room and admittedly tiny bathroom, and we were very comfortable and cozy. Also, the traffic outside didn't bother us a bit.
The breakfast was very good, with the veggie options especially thoughtfully varied.
We didn't meet many staff, but our needs were amply satisfied with smiles and good humour.
The Chantry is a very easy stroll from loads of restaurants, cafes and places of interest in the town - definitely a good place to stay, and we'd love to return.

Room Tip: The downstairs annex room is very easily accessible.

I stayed one cold night at the Chantry Hotel, and was pleasantly impressed by how absolutely impeccable the bedroom was, whether in terms of cleanliness (spotless), but also decor, amenities, and how comfortable the mattress was.
It was a cold night out in Bury St Edmunds, but at no point did I feel cold or even chilly in the hotel.
The color schemes and general decoration work very well, making the property a truly lovely 'traditional yet modern' British hotel.
We were also slightly late for breakfast, yet the staff cooked us a full English all the same, and helped us to our train on time (despite us being delayed).

The Chantry is Hyacinth Bucket's idea of a hotel. It is a B&B, nothing more. Lunch? Nooo. Same goes for dinner. And the table top bar? Worst of all was the room. Tiny is too generous a word. There was space for only one bedside table. The room was so grim we stayed out with the plus point that the next door neighbours could no longer be heard. Breakfast was top class, and with linen napery. But for £126? Next day we stayed in a Holiday Inn room four times the size and comparable in price. Later still we had a Cambridge B&B - £35 cheaper but where we could eat - and drink - any old time we liked.

Room Tip: Do not be fobbed off with the annexe

We are not a corporate hotel with busy bars, identical rooms and function rooms. Instead we offer individual accommodation in two listed buildings in the heart of the conservation area with car parking. We have furnished our rooms individually some with quality antique beds and paintings and they are graded from standard to superior and deluxe which have much more space and extra facilities.
In London there is now a trend towards town house hotels which are in smart townhouses and only offer breakfast as they are near numerous restaurants etc.
You can walk to over 60 eating places from the Chantry and having this choice on our doorstep is one of the reasons we are a very popular hotel with one of the highest ratings of all the hotels in the area. We often think that reviews say as much about the reviewer as the the hotel and in this case we see that you are often dissatisfied.

This was a great find for me. I liked the off street parking in a hotel so close to the town and also the Records Office which I needed to visit each day. I was lucky to get a room at the back of the hotel as I think those at the front could be noisy due to the traffic. I enjoyed the breakfast each morning and found the staff obliging at all times.

Having moved away from Bury St Edmunds 8 years ago it was wonderful to return and spend time at The Chantry Hotel. Just the most delightful suite with a bed more comfortable than any I’ve ever slept in! Divine! Intimate, cosy, pristine describe all areas of the hotel and the young chap hosting our stay was engaging without trying too hard. Perfect!
