My partner booked this as a surprise for my birthday and it was just perfect! We stayed in room 209 which has a big bay window that overlooks the river and the bridge...stunning. I think I lay awake most of the night because I didn't want to miss a minute! Breakfast was fabulous - served on VERY hot plates! The hotel is run by a lovely family and nothing was too much trouble. Cant wait to return!

We were treated to one of the best nights stay we've ever had , my request for a river view was met, Albert and his family were very warm and friendly as was the room , very hot radiator! , they recommended the cornmill restaurant for are evening meal which was again first class, a very comfortable nights sleep was had , helped by the soothing sound of the river .Breakfast in the morning was first class , a full selection of dietary needs , I chose the full English , served on a red hot place !, my partner and I had a thoroughly enjoyable stay and will return , thank you .

Room Tip: River view

We came here new years eve the location couldn't be any better this was our 2nd time here. . The staff couldn't do enough for us. They were lovely. And it's a lovely clean and spotless hotel.. Our breakfast next morning was beautiful. All fresh and hot. With plenty of tea and coffee. They also had cereals and fruit juices that you could help yourself to. We met The owner who was also a lovely man. Me. My husband and daughter all enjoyed this hotel. We will definitely without a doubt be staying here again..thankyou Donna

Having read quite a few of the earlier reviews, it was with more than a fair amount of trepidation that we decided to book our stay here. Not totally sure what exactly some of the negative reviewers were actually after, as we had nothing but pleasant experiences , from the moment we checked in, right up until we left, we were sited in a beautiful family room, which was bright, spacious & Clean, Large Bathroom & WC. The Staff were polite and helpful at all times. Breakfast was a very pleasant experience, once again very polite and attentive staff, all made this a very enjoyable experience.

Now the bad parts. The lack of a lift may well deter less able people from booking as the Stairs do seem quite steep, I understand that, like the nearby Hand Hotel,, this may well be something to do with listed status, and as a result, certain building alterations are not permitted, for our family that was only a minor quibble. The fact that the bar ran out of one particular drink and also never had soft drinks on Draught (despite the facilities being in place) goes towards the loss of full marks,

However The Lounge area is a great place to relax, sited as it is, with a great view of the river, and a very pleasant place to while away some time before moving off outside.

Overall, a very pleasant stay, excellent and friendly staff, pleasant surroundings, would definitely stay again without any hesitation at all

Room Tip: River views are quieter, than the front, some complained about the Clock Chimes, we found it pleasant and helpful

What can I say the royal is in a beautiful spot right next to the river but sadly needs a bit of TLC can’t fault the staff as they were all ver polite breakfast could be better but got what we asked for couldn’t grumble for what we paid would stay again but prefer the hand hotel that is more or less the same price
