Owner description: Perhaps nowhere else in the world can evoke the power of the romantic past more than Abbotsford, stunningly located on the banks of the River Tweed in the Scottish Borders. Abbotsford sits at the heart of the landscape that inspired the poetry and novels of its creator, Sir Walter Scott. Unlike the homes of other great writers, this is a house that the writer himself designed and as such uniquely embodies a physical representation of the Romantic Movement that he helped to create. When you touch the bricks and mortar of Abbotsford, you are touching the soul of Scott. Our new FREE to access Visitor Centre is home to a Stylish Restaurant, Gift Shop and Exhibition on the life and legacy of Sir Walter Scott.

I have never been a fan of Retro-Castles, such as Neuschwanstein or Disney's Cinderella Castle. There are so many real castles that are far more interesting. Walter Scott's Abbotsford House has me rethinking my erstwhile opinion.

Scott invested his last years and his fortune building this dream. What separates this 'castle' from the ersatz variety is its reflection of its 'author'. The building contents evince Scott's broad range of interests and curiosities.

As is so often the case in the UK, it is the volunteer hosts who bring these places to life. Their knowledge is matched only by their passion for the properties. We spoke with many of these people and found each and every one of them praiseworthy, and often wryly humorous.

Make sure you check out the overview at the visitor's center before you visit the house. It will significantly enhance your enjoyment of the site. Special tip: try the restaurant for a good meal or snack at a very affordable price.

What an incredible review! We are delighted to hear that we have changed your mind on mock fairytale castles, despite not even being one ;)
Our volunteers will be especially happy to hear such rave reviews and we will make sure to share your comments with them. We would all very much look forward to welcoming you again in the future.

Sir Walter Scot is an essential part of Scotland's history. His house reflects his brilliance and bizarreness.

This was the high light of our day out. The visitor centre was very well situated with good facilities. The walk down the path towards the house was beautiful and then you come to the house. Oh boy it was stunning. We chose the actors audio tour of the house and it was very entertaining. The views down to the River Tweed were lovely.

This house offers a visit which is excellent entertainment for a visitor. It begins in a scene-setting in the visitor centre, and continues with a warm, friendly welcome in the House reception. The audio guide is excellent. An actor in Walter Scott character takes you through the rooms at your own pace with as much time as you wish to view some of the many items on display. At various points, you click on a displayed title, for the audio for that item. The commentary is delightful, professional, adequate without being over-adequate. The rooms on view are a splendid reflection of Scott’s interests and his life there.

Well worth a visit.
