This is an Edinburgh curry house institution. The son of the owner has now taken the reigns and it is excellent.
Proper Indian food - Prawns lamb and chicken dishes were superb - small wine list but decent and sensible price.
Service first class and excellent VFM

After having spent most of the afternoon walking around Stockbridge we stumbled across an old Edinburgh institute Lancers Brasserie and we were so glad we did!
My friend opted to go with the squid starter and the Okra fries garnished with curry mayonnaise We were not disappointed! I went for the Goat Sooka, a meat dish that you don't see often on an Indian restaurant menu. Again this was bursting with flavours. We will be returning very soon! Service was very good. The ambiance in their newly refurbished premises makes it a stand out restaurant!

Excited to try the new look Lancers in Stockbridge. We were especially looking forward to trying their innovative sounding creations of venison vindaloo and their new goat specialities. We were not disappointed in either the quality or layered spice, delicious flavours created. The whole experience to be highly recommended. The nan breads are served so fresh and puffy like little pillows of deliciousness. The starters all sounded intriguing and we can’t wait to try others. We opted for the mixed platter which consisted of light and fluffy pakora, samosa which melted in the mouth and pieces of chicken tikka deliciously seared on the outside but beautifully moist on the inside. The cocktails were also well thought out and proved to be great accompaniment to the food. An excellent new addition to the Stockbridge restaurant scene.

Went here for dinner last night and loved it. The renovation is stunning and the food was top drawer. Can’t wait to return and sample more of the menu.

So - Lancers is something of a local institution, and I was disappointed to see it close down last September. There was no notification, and their website doesn't seem to have been updated since Christmas 2011 so seemed like a pretty unreliable guide. But work seemed to be happening, and the restaurant reopened last week - refurbished and with a new feel and a new menu.

We managed to get a booking in the packed restaurant on Friday night, and we were very pleased with the experience.

The new menu is smaller than the old one, and more focused as a result. The old menu included the "standard" of Indian restaurants from the 1980s - a choice of three types of meat and your pick of ten different sauces. The new menu is more focused on actual specific dishes, meaning that they can offer more interesting dishes like 48-hour marinated lamb chops, King Prawn Bombay Street Tacos or slow-cooked goat. We went for a biryani, a jalfrezi and a sag paneer - all of which were really great, nicely spiced and varied. We left wanting to try more.

Yes, there are a few things that need to be ironed out - but at this point it is less than a week since they reopened, and they are incredibly busy. As noted above, their website is ridiculously out of date. But the will is there, the enthusiasm is there, and the underlying food is fantastic.

I'm looking forward to my next visit.
