I had heard great things about Balgove Larder and we were excited to visit the steak barn for dinner. On arrival we were told it would be around 30-40 mins wait for a table in the barn. Not ideal but we got a drink and waited at the tables outside (we knew from the website that it was not possible to book a table in advance).
I chased up after 45 minutes as we were with a hangry 5 year old, coincidentally our table was ready.
We ordered a couple of steaks with a side of onion rings and a burger for our daughter.
The drinks and food took a while to arrive which probably felt longer given we’d already waited 45 mins to sit down.
The steaks were cooked perfectly but neither the steak or the chips had been seasoned. You would also never know the steaks had been cooked on a wood fired bbq with no depth of flavour. The steaks come with ‘twice cooked chips’ which were akin to chips you would get from a chip shop and soggy because the steak was served on top. We had to ask for seasoning which arrived in paper sachets- perhaps Covid related so I’ll give them that.
The staff were young and seemed to lack experience and/or any real desire to be working there.
Overall really disappointing. It looks very pretty and authentic but fails to deliver the basics. We will not be rushing back.
