Having read a previous review about the Morlich lodge upgrades, we decided to try it. We were not disappointed and our family of two adults, a 6.5 year old and 4 year old enjoyed our stay.

Check in was straight forward and staff were welcoming. Lodge was clean, modern enough for us and well equipped. Our lodge was a single building so no neighbours beside, above or below us so our noisy children couldn't disturb anyone (except us parents!). Parking for two cars available right outside the lodge.

WiFi coverage is good and remember electricity is charged at the end of the stay. Still don't understand why but it's the same at the Macdonald Forest Hills self catering lodges which we enjoyed back in May.

The bedrooms are of a good size and lots of storage. There's a utility room with a washing machine and sink so great for the wet clothing and shoes. Bathrooms all have bath tubs plus shower attachments. We also had an electric standalone shower plus a sauna which was enjoyed! Beds were comfy and plenty of towels provided. Living space excellent with an open plan kitchen and dining area in the mezzanine, then down 3 steps into the living room with an open log fire. The conservatory was lovely and bright to compensate for the darker areas of the lodge.

We cooked a meal for one night and the crockery, cooking utensils etc. were suffice. Dishwasher was handy and dishwasher cleaning tabs provided. Lots of great places to eat out or get takeaway nearby.

We used the pool a lot which was one of the reasons we booked here but it would have been nice if Spey Valley Resort residents could use the Aviemore Resort facilities too but they were only allowing their hotel guests to us it only (it was the same rule with the restaurants too). Not sure if this was because of C-19 rules or otherwise? We still went down there to use their play park which is miles better and they also had some paid activities there.

Overall, it was a pleasant base for our holiday but may be next time we will try the self catering lodges in the Aviemore Resort so we can access the bigger pool, soft play, etc. When you compare it to somewhere like Crieff Hydro and Centre Parcs, they give better value for money but I think with shared facilities/restaurants with the Aviemore Resort and improving the play park and other on-site facilities here, it could be a better proposition.

Macdonald - not what it used to be. Dirty, damp smelling chalet. The shelf from the fridge door even fell onto my foot. Would have been better in a caravan. Left a day early. Avoid at all costs. Woman at reception did her best but could only move us to a chalet with the same tired decor and furnishings, but it smelt a bit better!

Glad to get back after Covid, some restrictions but still a good holiday. Resort not as busy as usual and need to pre book if dining out. Aviemore has some new shops e.g. Aldi but has also lost some great shops. In particular the Butcher.

The self catering property had not been cleaned properly. Cooking facilities were not clean. eg. Frying pan still had dirty grease in it. The grill pan and the cooker itself were dirty. A baking tray and drinking glasses were dirty. This then begs the question that if the kitchen items had not been cleaned properly, then to what standards were Covid cleansing practices being taken if at all. Putting a sanitising complete seal on the door of the property does not ensure cleanliness!
