We dropped in here for lunch when travelling back to Dublin from Gweedore.
What a gem of a place. The bar area had a great atmosphere with very friendly staff.
There was a good choice on the menu and the food itself was outstanding. I would recommend the lamb shepard pie.
I would highly recommend this place for a drink and especially food if in the area.

The owner met our coach tour group at the door and once we were seated, he gave us a good overview about the fascinating history of the tavern and the village. Our group were the only diners on this evening. The singer provided both Irish and American tunes as he skillfully played his guitar. The interior walls are artfully decorated with a wide collection of (empty) wine bottles and other artsy items. With my dinner I enjoyed a local brew, Donegal Brewing Company's Blonde, crafted in "Ireland's Oldest Towne, Ballyshannon." The service was very good, the food very good, and the music very good. So… it's not surprising that a very good time was had by all!

We are regular visitors to The Tavern and have food here most weekends. The food is always of the best quality you will find anywhere. Menu caters for all tastes with a wide variety of meat, fish & chicken dishes. Vegetarian tastes are also catered for. On a few occasions we found the service slower than normal because the restaurant is so busy. The staff are excellent. This is a gem of a place and I would recommend a visit. You are also likely to meet some of the great people of Mountcharles who frequent the Tavern for a drink. You will hear some interesting tales.

Salmon with noodles, peppers garlic and Teriyaki was delicious. Partner had a gorgeous garlic linguini. Highly recommended and earns its place in the top 100 Irish Restaurants.

Went here as we had a gift voucher. Service was extremely slow. Took a long time til we got our order taken.struggled to get more drinks to our table. Starters came out half hour after we ordered...couldn't fault food! Dinner another half hour later. The waitresses were rushing about all over the place, needed more help! My husband ordered medium rare steak.. it was well done!! But was good size and quality meat. It said there was homemade chips..they were just frozen chips, bit disappointing. They made the desserts sound very fancy with the wording... Chili crumble chocolate fondant? There was no crumble or chili, fondant was cold too. Vanilla pod icecream.. it was just plain old vanilla ice cream. My mother ordered creamed rice pudding which sounded nice... id say it was just tinned rice pudding! Over all.. wont be back.
