My boyfriend and I, with his two teenage daughters, needed to book a family room for a two night stay. Reviews seemed good so we went with Flannerys.
The hotel looked ok from the outside. Reception upon first impression, did seem a little dated, but no biggie. We were given a room at the end of a narrow corridor with motion sensor lighting. Let's just say it took the sensors a while to notice the motion lol. Narrow double doors had to be opened and squeezed through with our luggage. Hall smelled damp, and a little waft of long ago cigarette smoke. Layers upon layers of paint on old walls and doors. Bathroom was almost spooky it was so old and dated. Bath mat was grey ( originally it had been white) I felt I was visiting an old great aunt or something!!! Lol. I could have put that all aside though, til I say on the bed. I literally rolled right into the dip in the middle. The mattress was just done. The pillows were no better. What a bad nights sleep :((((
The personnel in reception though, and all over staff, could NOT have been friendlier or more helpful. And genuine. Which is why when they asked about my stay I just said it was fine. I didn't want to insult them, they were really great.
We then needed to book a hotel to further our vacation in Dublin. Flannerys staff suggested their sister hotel the Ashling in Dublin. I was verrrry nervous but we had no internet on the road, and hadn't booked in advance, so we just went with it. It was very expensive but a much nicer place. Same lovely staff, just updated. So please mister owner of Flannerys on the Dublin road, give your amazing staff a better hotel to run!!!!!!! This is 2016, not 1976!!!!!!! It really is time!!!!!

I was disappointed to hear you felt the hotel was dated as we have done extensive refurbishments over the years and have received many positive comments. Please be assured we will take your feedback on board and thank you for the lovely comments on the staff and our sister hotel in Dublin.

We hope to welcome you back in the future.

Flannery's Hotel Galway was our second leg of our island vacation. From check in to departure the staff was beyond accommodating. Sarah at check in made us feel welcome. Each afternoon and evening the wait staff went above and beyond. Special thanks to Aishling, Auife, Keith, (thanks for the hot soup for our not feeling well member in our group), Geoff, (the pizza and sandwiches after the kitchen was closed were chef worthy), Jennifer, Liam, and Chef Schumann for the lamb. Many memories and great laughs. They are wonderful.

On Monday 13th June, we drove 500+ miles to Galway to find somewhere we could stay for a few days and would be able to cater for our particular needs, mainly dietary.

We were directed to Flannery’s Hotel. During our enquiries we were shown a typical room and shown the emergency exits (claustrophobia is one of our particular needs). The duty manager could not have been more helpful. We then supplied them with a detailed list of our dietary needs and even supplied them with typical breakfasts that would suit. Once again they paid us respect and assured us that they would be able to provide for our needs. Based on the assurances we booked there and then.

Fast forward three weeks to Sunday 2nd July.

We arrived and booked in. We reminded them of our dietary requirements and once again they assured us that all was in hand. However, the next morning, our first breakfast was not a great experience. There was no suitable fresh fruit available and a meagre omelette was hastily prepared. Gluten-free pork sausages were ‘discovered’ ( gluten intolerance is one of our dietary difficulties) and prepared; however, had they looked at the list we had given them three weeks earlier, pork was another dietary difficulty, so the sausages were totally unsuitable. Had we not brought our own gluten-free, sugar-free bread, it would have been much worse. (During our pre-visit, we informed them of bread that could be used for breakfast). So much for being able to provide for our needs! Do they not realise that these intolerances, for lots of people, is not a ‘fad’ but a fact of life and a forced life-style. It seems that lip-service was the only service we received.

Breakfast the next morning was marginally better insofar as fresh fruit was available along with yet more eggs. However, something within the breakfast (we suspect the yoghurt) was not sugar-free and we had a reaction. When we informed them they apologised. But that was all that happened. Once again the advice we’d passed on regarding hidden sugars with foodstuffs was not given the importance it deserved. Do they not read the ingredients on food labels? Just because a food is labelled ‘Natural’ doesn’t mean it hasn’t had sugar added and I would have thought trained and experienced chefs would know that. Obviously not!

We will not be back.

Easy to get to by car ( and ample parking) and a short cab ride to restaurants and pubs in city centre. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Nice breakfast buffet. Great place for our first night in Ireland.
