Review of Kells Priory

I was so lucky, the day that I was there I was able to climb to the top of the round tower which was the Prior's residence. There was a young man who was wonderful and gave a guided tour to me and two local couples up to the top of the tower. It was very quiet there, barely anyone about and so very old. Truly awe inspiring if you love history.

When you are leaving the town Kilkenny, and are looking for a short stop on the way to the next big thing, go and visit Kells Priory. Walk around the ruins, take in the atmosphere.

Don't expect to spend a lot of time there. However, it's free and the local school made a lovely information brochure to read about the priory's history. So when you will be in the neighbourhood be sure to stop by.

A great place for a picnic among the beautiful ruins.Lots of good photo opps.Nothing has been restored so you are looking at what the 18th century saw.The river is a nice place to sit.Few people visit as it is less famous than the Kells where the 'book' came from.

We visited here while staying in a nearby B&B and were happy for the recommendation. No tour and no fee but a great place to explore and enjoy the outdoors. Make sure to take the path that runs along the river, past a water mill, and onto the road to return to your car. A nice walk that only takes about 30 minutes.

We visited at the recommendation of our B&B as the priory was a short drive down the road. What a great place to visit! They offered free tours every 15 minutes, which we found informative and helped us imagine what it originally looked like. They offer tours inside the tour but only in the afternoon (recommend visiting during that time if you would like tour of both tower and grounds). After the tour, follow the path from the back of the church along the river to a water mill, through the town and back to the car park- approximately 30 min walk but worth it. A great piece of history right outside of Kilkenny
