We enjoy staying in older establishments such as Berkeley House, which was built in the early 1700's, so the occasional creaks heard while walking up the stairs only added to its charm in our estimation. The rooms are nice with good beds, and all the bathrooms have been updated. The dining room is very pleasant; we were provided warm croissants, delicious coffee and a substantial cold breakfast. Most tourist sites are within easy walking distance, and Kilkenny Castle is just around the corner. Although we were fortunate to find a parking space right in front on the first day, they recommend that guests park at the city parking garage about a block away.

The most friendly staff we had in Ireland - Great breakfast and very close to all the attractions in Kilkenny.
The room was large and the wifi signal was strong. I would recommend Berkeley House to anyone planning on visiting Kilkenny.

The hotel is located in the heart of the action. The young lady at the front desk is amazingly friendly and helpful, and is superwoman perhaps as she did everything from checking you in to serving breakfast. Thanks for going above and beyond.
The only reason it did not get an excellent from me is that they advertise free parking and a free Full Irish breakfast. In reality parking is only free after 6 PM and it is a continental breakfast, not Full Irish. They really should advertise both correctly.
Note that they have no lift. So if stairs are a challenge or you have heavy bags, this is not the hotel for you.

Pro:
*great location downtown
*good mattresses
*nice staff
*quiet
*good shower
*good sized room (but apparently the only one with twin beds that is a good size is room 102 on first floor)

Negative:
*creaky beds and furniture is a bit beat
*staff is somewhat unavailable
*weak wifi

We had a situation where we were given a key with a broken outside key so had to go a sister hotel to get back in. Towel rack was missing and furniture was a bit beat. When I asked for a towel rack, they were nice about it (it was never fixed though she said she'd call maintenance and the new rack was sitting on a shelf in the office). In the end, they offered us free full breakfast at the sister hotel which was nice. In general the staff was kind, but pretty unavailable most of the time.

Room Tip: if getting a double twin bed room, ask for the first floor where the room and bath are the biggest

The space itself was adequate for a place to crash for the night -- but the water coming out of the pipes is totally gross. After a night of enjoying a few pints of Guinness at the local pub, we came back and tried to drink some water from the sink, but it was disgusting. A quick Google search showed us that the city's water is not good (maybe due to old piping?). It was late, and Kilkenny is a sleepy town, so there were no stores open nearby, that we could find. It would be very nice for the hotel to supply bottles or even a pitcher of drinking water.
