Yesterday, (4.3.18) my daughter and her family took me to my favourite Hong Kong style eating house to celebrate my 77th birthday. We started off with the best Salt & Pepper Spare Ribs in the whole of greater Manchester, followed by Har Gow and Sui Mai. Our main courses were Stone Fried Sea Bass with Szechuan Sauce, Beef with Green Pepper and Black Bean, Cantonese Fried Spring Chicken with Vermicelli Singapore Style and Egg Fried Rice. The spare ribs, the dim sum and the beef were very good indeed and though I would have preferred the sea bass with a less powerful sauce I enjoyed it more than previously. Apart from the fact that the chicken was rather dry this was a very good meal and excellent value for money at £95 for three adults and two children and including a doggy bag of vermicelli, rice and chicken. Please note this is a review of the Ocean Treasure Seafood Restaurant on Greenside Way in Middleton and not the restaurant in the city centre with a similar name. Die-hard Sinophiles should also remember the additional menu of regional specialities which includes pigs chit’lins stuffed with prawn meat and other delights which I have not yet persuaded my family to sample. The restaurant was quite busy with plenty of Chinese families and service was good.

There’s no doubt the food here is really good, the service is always fine too with staff who are professional and very efficient.

The restaurant, however, is sadly beginning to look shabby. We have taken lots of friends to Ocean Treasure over the years but have recently stopped doing this as we feel embarrassed having to make excuses for it’s poor appearance. The tables are fine and always set with clean, fresh linen cloths but the carpet in the restaurant is covered in stains and taped together all over the place where it has worn. It’s very off-putting; if this is what is “on show” you do begin to wonder how things are behind the scenes. The carpet would probably be best replaced with something more serviceable and hygienic that could be easily cleaned.

Disabled access is “available” but very poor. We do wonder how such a large establishment gets away with this in these days of “equality”. There is no lift at the entrance to the restaurant, you have to walk right to the back of the supermarket (an arduous task when we take our elderly parents who are not good on their feet) and then you are not allowed to use the lift without waiting for a member of staff from the restaurant upstairs to come down and accompany you - this can involve quite a wait with nowhere to sit, so be advised. If you are a wheelchair user I think it would be almost impossible. We had to negotiate part of the kitchen upstairs to get to the dining area and, as there was food stored (uncovered) in the corridors, it would not have been possible for a wheelchair to get through.

We have been going to Ocean Treasure for years and will continue to do so for the food alone but we will avoid it for social gatherings with friends until it is brought back to a more acceptable standard of decor and is more easily accessible to all.

Came here to see if they improved, they are quite far out of the centre but still unjustifiable charge high prices.

One good dish is the fried sweet and sour whole fish.

Otherwise overpriced and and not worth it

Food was very good. Atmosphere fabulous.
Great venue for any celebration or a cosy dinner for two. Black pepper chicken was very tasty.
