This is a quiet oasis in busy Versailles - a period house with garden, several floors and interesting presentations of historical events which took place in the town - the meeting of the States-General, the tennis-court oath, etc. which precipitated the French revolution. Several rooms have been carefully furnished to show the life of a typical bourgeois family injust such a house in the 18th century - very well done. Alas, we visited in August, so the tea room was closed!

Very reasonable. Gives you a taste of old France. No English translation.

Everyone rightly makes a fuss about Versailles. It is epic, magnificent, breathtaking. It is also, if you don't know when to time your visit, crowded, noisy, cramped, and so overrun with people and tour buses you can hardly get a sense of the place. When that happens, take a deep breath and walk to the Neptune Basin in the gardens. Turn right and walk down Blvd de la Reine to Musee Lambinet. Originally a private town home built by a merchant, it now has an extensive private collection of 18th c. artifacts ranging from apothecary jars and other medical items from the Royal Hospital to a room on Charlotte Corday and the revolution. I got the most from the floors that were on exhibit depicting what a real 18th c. home would look like. It's not often that you get to see something that's found the balance between objective information and thoughtful presentation. On the day I went there were more staff than visitors so I was able to take plenty of time to see everything. Well worth the 4€ admission They also have a tea room and a lovely service.
One tip: Make sure you can navigate some basics in French. Even though it's a tourist location, don't ever take for granted everyone speaks your language.
