We came here as a part of a tour. Fortunately the Church was empty on a November weekday. The Church striking in the morning. It faces the rising sun and radiates throughout Bayeux. A must see.

We visited Bayeux, France and stayed in Bayeux. We had a beautiful view of the Cathedral from our B&B. Originally, the Bayeux Tapestry was on display in the Cathedral but now is is protected under glass at the Museum. We were fortunate to be there when the light and sound show displayed the replica of the Bayeux Tapestry in the Cathedral. Wow, what a display. This Cathedral is an example of Gothic and Renaissance architecture. It is over a 1,000 years old. At night, the outside is lighted and it appears golden.
This is a very impressive building to see while you are in town. Centrally located it is worth wandering around the outside then going in to experience the internal space.
The age, history and design is something that was a pleasant surprise to us. The shear size of it is amazing. In most things we read, it talked about tours and limited times so we thought we had missed the opportunity to visit. As a fluke I tried the door and it was open. It is open to the public for free. Dating back to early France, 1010, take the time and explore.
Like many of the massive multi- century old french cathedrals, this one has its own charm. And it's unique in being home for centuries to the famous Tapestry depicting the 1066 Battle of Hastings that changed the face if Europe.
I traveled to Bayeux to be near the D day beaches. Little did I know of the history and magnificence centered in this Cathedral build by William the conqueror's brother. It is over 1,000 years old ! It is not as though it rivals other cathedrals as I had seen St Peters and Notre Dame earlier on my trip. It has its own sense and part in a unique historry of the region.
