I have been trying the 4 Michelin Star restaurants of Caen, in Normandy. I was going to write a review at the end commenting on each restaurant. However, after last night's disaster dinner, I decided to write a review for Ivan Vaultier immediately.

I sent an email last week to book a table. I explained on the booking confirmation one partie was allergic to alcohol and didn't like onions. Michelin Star restaurant will generally accommodate and make changes to menus without problems.

When we arrived at the restaurant it didn't seem they had received the email and immediately serviced us small appetisers, one containing alcohol. Aa they served us the tasting menu, I couldn't help wonder why some ingredients were removed from my dish but not replaced with another one bearing in mind they had been given a week to think of what could be used instead of the ingredients containing alcohol.

I had to pour the sparkling water in our glasses as the waters rarely where on the floor checking the tables, food was served to our table whilst I had gone to the toilet and no one came back to give me the name of the dish and/or describe it the dish. The only dish that was interesting was the pudding, but even tho was way too sugary and too much of it aa it was served after some small selection of other type of sweets. None of which work very well together.

Overall, this is my definition of a car crash in a restaurant. It was very poor quality, nothing a would qualify as a Michelin Star restaurant.

Finally, the light bulbs and frames were very dusty and full of spider Webb. As we left and paid the bill, no one asked us how was our dinner!

To be perfectly honest, this restaurant is not worthy of a Michelin Star and was too expensive for the quality. I was at Contre Sense (one of the 4 Michelin star restaurants in Caen) last week and there cannot be compared. Contre Sense truly deserve a star for the food quality, ambiance and excellent service.

Avoid this restaurant as it stands, it is very poor.

Since my last visit I tried the other Michelin's star in town. We keep coming back to Ivan Vautier. Easy parking, nice decor, space between the tables, very peaceful. The food us delicate and inventive, full of savors. Great bread. Friendly service. For the Saint Jacques (scallops) menu from local catch, water and a great bottle of cider: 180 euros for two. The degustation menu being at 105€. During the week they have very reasonable menus.

This restaurant really stands out from the crowd. Very professional and friendly service, top Chef & crew, amazing surprising dishes with surprising tastes and presentations. One of our absolute favourites in Normandy, absolutely worth the trip!
Ranks, as far as we are concerned, in the top 5 of Normandy.

We ate at each of the Michelin 1* Restaurants in Caen on consecutive nights in September. Ivan Vautier was the most expensive, but also the most polished, with classical service you expect at this level. The all lobster menu we had was bordering on 2* for quality and presentation, with unusual combinations including generous amounts of white and black truffle with the 2nd half of the lobster tail in the third course. Overall an outstanding dining experience and highly recommended.

We've stopped for a night on our way to Brittany and had the lobster menu. Each dish was delicately cooked, refined and delicious. The wine selection was also very good ranging in all prices to your liking. The bread was home-made and absolutely divine so as the pastry. We had a table in the garden elegantly decorated. Like a little haven.
Breakfast also offered great healthy selection including homemade jams, gluten free granolas, and various pastries.
The service was also good and the staff very friendly.
