I stayed for two nights in December. This was not my first time in Giverny, so I can compare my stay to three other chamber d'hote/hotel experiences and this one was right up there with the best. I have long been intrigued by this little rue des Juifs and I finally got my chance to book a room and I am very happy that I did. My room, while rustic, was comfortable and had a little kitchenette and a very nice bathroom. If I had brought groceries from Vernon I would have settled in quite happily, but then I wouldn't have had the opportunity to spend an evening out in the village. Eric knows everyone in town and he told me about a supper party at the boulangerie which I was lucky to get into. I had a fabulous time and I would be delighted to rester chez Eric any time!

We didn't book via TripAdvisor so I was very surprised to see the other reviews when I logged on to leave comments. And I am glad I didn't see them as we would have missed out on a wonderful week-end! We booked the "gite" for 2 nights - it is a 500 year old cottage with its own garden. If you are looking for luxury, this is not your place - it is scruffy and presented with a mishmash of towels and kitchenalia. But it oozes charm and character and there are so many fabulous details like light fittings, window handles, enamel kitchenware. It has the kind of kitsch one would love to install in their own holiday cottage. The place was scrupulously clean, spacious and comfortable. It is quiet but ideally suited for easy strolls through the village (which is beautiful). The hosts are great company and a simple breakfast is served in another building with even more character and history. If you want to top your Monet visit with some authentic French character rather than another bland beige hotel room, this is unmissable.

Room tip: Book the independent "gite" - it sleeps up to 5 people.

I arrived at 7pm and if it had been earlier, I would have bolted and tried to book elsewhere. The room was right by a 2.5m high bank (side of lane) that had no damp course between the bank and the stone exterior wall. The room was cold and damp because it did not get any sun. Fortunately there was a bar heater so I had that on overnight which was successful in getting rid of the damp smell. The duvet and bedspread were so damp I asked the owner's son to change them which was done. The shower cubicle was tiny even by French standards. It was clean and the location was excellent for visiting Monet's garden as it was within walking distance.

Room tip: Simple, spend a little more and stay at another B&B in Giverney.
