Hotel La Mirande

In our humble opinion, this 5 star hotel deserves at least 10 stars. 0ur entire stay was highlighted with the extra effort put forth by EVERY person working at La Mirande. Our arrival was a confusion of a variety of maps taking us every which way in this crazy medieval city (beware, GPS does NOT work here, not Waze, not Apple Maps, not Google maps not even our usually reliable old school Garmin!) We finally found a place to pull over and used the map to walk to the hotel. We were assisted in person with the remainder of our drive to the front of the beautiful hotel. (Again, we didn’t know some of the metal street barriers lowered when the right buttons are pushed!)

The front desk staff greeted us warmly and welcomed us to this gorgeous hotel. Even the house cat, Mirande, came to say hello! Staying here feels like royalty, which is maybe why the Cardinals of yore made this their home. We settled onto our large, corner room and enjoyed the lovely view of the Palais des Popes! Located in a very quiet part of this very loud city, we could not have been more pleased with our room (#31). We were even surprised with a lovely box of delicious Aline Gehant chocolates along with fresh pears and figs.

Our room was very large! The king-size bed was super comfortable as were the two types of pillows, hard and soft. Amenities such as the room safe, slippers, robes, toiletries, wash clothes, fantastic AC and a daily evening refresh of towels and curtains closed were icing on the cake. The bathroom had a separate toilet and shower which allowed for both of us to get ready at the same time. There are plenty of drawers and shelves to settle in. A hideaway TV that poses as a mirror and the in room safe and fridge that pose as a wallpaper covered door were very fun! A fine example of the type of hospitality offered was when we asked for some ice for our picnic wine, our bag was filled happily!

The hotel offers some very unique dining experiences of which we took advantage of two on our three nights here. Our fist night, we enjoyed the gastronomic meal! Several courses of amazing food very professionally prepared and served with great show. We loved the printed menu we received at the end to remind us of the food we had enjoyed. The second night we dined with the Table Haute. Can’t recommend this highly enough! The experience begins with a group of guests gathering downstairs. We were led further down to the wine cellar where we enjoyed appetizers, wine and conversation. With our group, French was the main language spoken, but many of the guests, as well as the chefs were able to speak English so we felt very included. We then returned upstairs to the kitchen where we watched our meal being prepared and served. The paired wines were exceptional! One of the best parts was that the shared conviviality continued whenever we saw the other guests at breakfast over the next few mornings. La Mirande also offers cooking classes which if we had enough time, we would’ve loved to taken!

The morning breakfast was served on tables with linens in a beautiful room different from the dining room. The buffet included fruits, a wide variety of jams and breads, cereals, juices and meats with cheese. Options to order eggs, omelets and pancakes were also available.

There is a bar with a very large selection in the lobby. Perfect for enjoying an afternoon aperitif!

Covid protocols including showing your health pass, masks in general areas and sanitizers were all observed. We felt very safe here.

Our departure was just as kind as our arrival and stay. Clear directions out of the city maze were provided and deeply appreciated! Our car was brought around with our bags loaded and bon voyage wishes shared. In our opinion, this is THE place to stay in Avignon!

Room tip: Definitely get directions for arrival from the hotel prior to you visit. We were unable to access on our phone when we arrived.

This hotel is charming- old world, France in an excellent location adjacent to the Pope's Palace. The breakfast however is seriously lacking for such an expensive hotel. No croissants both mornings we were there! We Americans travel to France just for your croissants how can you deprive us of this lol! Seriously, the breakfast was lacking- chocolate croissants are not the same as croissants, please buy more when you know you have guests coming. There is only 1 girl manning all the tables & she is also in charge of refilling everything at the buffet table- please hire another person to help her out, it is too much for her! She is so sweet & works very hard but 1 person cannot cover everything. The outdoor courtyard is gorgeous & the breakfast room with all the food looks like something out of a movie set- just stunning. This hotel is beautiful & I highly recommend but please, up your breakfast game!

We booked two rooms for six nights. Everything about the property centered around service. Rasheed from Avignon, helped us with the winding streets leading to the hotel. His service was superb. But it was the front desk that earns the "gold star" for attention to detail with a genuine smile. At the top of the list is Morgan, a young lady that has more warmth than a roaring fire. We sought out her assistance and just to chat, she is a remarkable asset to Hotel La Mirande.

Not only this hotel is a historic building, but each room has got its own character, the staff is extremely friendly and professional. To access the hotel by car can be very tricky and difficult, depending on the car size, as streets are very small. We tried the surprise 9 course Michelin menu at the restaurant. It was an interesting experience, but 9 course is only for very hungry people. Also unclear, who is the Michelin Star Chef? Overall a very pleasant stay and perfect location to explore the town.

SO SO SO hospitable. Overwhelmingly warm. The food AMAZING - even the bar snacks are out of this world. The rooms are quaint and clean with great toiletry amenities - Guerlain.

Super tricky to find - it’s like a maze but really worth it.
