came to visit cousin in Avignon during the theater festival and who happens to lives right next to Papal Palais walls took us .We opted to skip the tour and climbed the step that lead up to the top and walked thru the church which was very beautiful, the gardens and over looked the views from the top looking down to town square and of the bridge and river. Just being there on the grounds and observing the structure and knowing that this was the first residence during the middle age of several popes when they came on vacations was history itself. Didn't want waste my time on the tour when you know that it is not furnish. Rather was happy to be there spending time and walking and being a local and drinking and meeting new friends. Avignon is quaint city that is walkable to the city center train station into the city walls only a three hour train trip from Paris. Only wish we've caught the theater festival in full swing, although was able to catch a few local actors still entertaining and see the explosions of posters littered through out the city. Will hope to come again back and stay longer in Avignon.
