Found Umi while walking round the Port of Nice. Take care as the sign is very difficult to read!
Inside it's stylish and very modern with terracotta warriors guarding the whole place. Service is very good and attentive and the tables are well spaced and not crammed together.
The food is wonderful with many influences of China and Thailand, but we still have lovely French bread to accompany our cocktails, also good. We had crispy fried prawns with lettuce and mint, think Nem spring rolls deconstructed, 6 were served with a sweet chilli sauce and were great. But I only had eyes for my wife's Thai carpaccio of beef with nuts, mint, coriander, fish sauce and a crispy topping. Heaven!
Mains were Blackened Cod with wok veg and Teriyaki Beef with fragrant rice. The beef was quite original with a whole piece of fillet, black from the marinade, sliced from th top, but not all th way through. This meant it was cooked rare, but still had a wonderful flavour. The rice was some of the best I have had, quite dry, perfectly cooked and fragrance with gentle spices. The Black Cod was perfect, flaking and soft, with just cooked wok fried veg.
By the time we were leaving, the place was buzzing with many parties of 6 or more, but it was Friday night and although we waited longer than I would have liked for the bill, we enjoyed the atmosphere..
All in all a great new find in Nice, we look forward to going back.
