Reading the reviews, it sounded like an OK hotel, considering I haven't had much choice when booking last minute, however...
- check-in: 3 of the hotel staff were present, and we were the only guests arriving quite late. Still, we were left waiting without being acknowledged until they finished looking at the screen and pushing papers left and right.
- room: outdated, half cleaned (dirty carpet, hair left in the bathtub...); empty mini-bar; TV with one (1) foreign-speaking channel (one news channel was available in EN);
- bed: the mattress was probably changed 10 years ago, and you get a nice back pain and many sleepless nights;
- bathroom: hand soap in the shower dispenser; non-height adjustable shower;
- amenities: a few paper cups to drink water, and coffee; there is no coffee machine, just a kettle for instant coffee;
- breakfast: it would be unfair to say that the choice was poor, there were plenty of options... if you had the appetite to eat from half-washed plates with yesterday's leftovers still visible the next morning;
I guess this was indeed a 4* hotel in the 70s or even the 80s; in 2022, this is a very basic low 3* hotel, situated in the middle of social housing.

Yoann PERRIN, General Manager at Mercure Marseille Centre Vieux Port, responded to this reviewResponded 29 December 2022

Hello,

I am very sorry that our establishment did not suit you.
Nevertheless, if criticism is generally constructive, I cannot allow you to make erroneous comments.
As you point out "Reading the reviews, it sounded like an OK hotel". Indeed, the vast majority of our guests are satisfied with their stay in our establishment, just read the various comments.
Our bedding was completely changed only a short time ago, the decoration of the hall is only a few weeks old, the bar was completely redone last year.
Our establishment is ideally located at 2 steps from the Old Port and the various centers of interest.
In addition, as part of our commitment to sustainable development, we have eliminated all single-use products, whether in the room or at breakfast. And this, of course, in the greatest respect of the rules of hygiene. These actions have enabled us to obtain the Clé Verte label, a label that distinguishes, at the international level, establishments committed to sustainable tourism.
Finally, our employees are reputed to be professionals with a real knowledge of hospitality.
... but perhaps your comment was directed to another establishment ... a mistake?

Sincerely

Yoann Perrin

I spent three days at the hotel in the midst of a meeting. Breakfast was amazing with so many options. Lunch was good and well served. Reception staff extremely helpful and friendly. Totally recommend for a casual trip/holidays or business. In particular after some logistic issues I had (bag delayed, forgot my phone in my room while on my way to the airport and would not have recovered the phone without the receptionist’ assistance; I wish I remember his name, I’m so grateful!)

Conveniently located, fair price and good sanitation. Check in is fast and fine, do no expect extra courtesy or politeness. The room is okay with a small window and bare minimum. Bed is comfortable. Breakfast room is well planned, arranged for the pandemic time. Breakfast staff is excellent. Food choice is average, adequate. Overall it is good for a business short stay.

I was visiting Marseille for a conference. The hotel was located very conveniently close to both metro and tram stops for easy travel around the city and easy walking to the Old Port with its restaurants. Typical of a business hotel, the staff were efficient but remote. The room was very clean and comfortable with relaxing chairs. The breakfast was very good with a good selection of hot and cold food and excellent croissants. Extensive road works were going on around the hotel.

Room tip: Ninth floor was very quiet
