“Beautiful Island and ideal for a cycling tour”

Reviewed 22 September 2016

Visited this beautiful Island on a cycling tour of Lake constance, well maintained and safe cycling lanes make this an idyllic location. The wildflowers, orchards and vegetable gardens make this a special place

A pretty interesting tour of the church and surrounding grounds. It was a pretty nice area with interesting architecture and history. Frankly, due to the tour size, I had a hard time hearing a lot of what was being said, and therefore don't remember much from it.

Stopped by leaving Konstanz, and visited the Church of Peter & Paul -- lots of interesting ancient history, and a good museum display to accompany. Do the exhibit before visiting the church for extra clarity.

Reichenau Island is about 10 km from Constance and there are great bike trails to get there. Most of the restaurants and supermarkets around Constance get their produce from that island, which is very beautiful, quaint, not as busy as Mainau (the flower island). The panorama is fantastic and the people are very welcomy. Biking is a great way to visit, whereas you cannot get your bike on Mainau Island.

The three churches which today recall the great Benedictine heritage of this island are well worth a visit. The church of St Peter and St Paul has faded 12th century frescoes in the apse. The more impressive church of St George, with a beautiful cycle of eight wall paintings in the nave, heavily restored, is only open through guided tours. My favourite is the larger church of St Mary and St Mark: the Munster. This is basically a Romanesque structure with a late Gothic choir and a few altars and statues from later periods. Somehow it all works together. There is an example of early Christian art in the treasury, a 4th century ivory incorporated into a medieval ciborium. Monks have returned to the island after a hiatus of 250 years and there have been one or two living here since 2001. However, the monastic glory of this island is well in the past. It is not like St Gall or one of the many other great continuing monastic establishments in Germany.
