I wanted to see this castle for a long long time. Once there it is very beautiful on the outside, on the inside it is also not bad but the electronic tour guide does explain just the bare minimum about the rooms and castle - we spend maybe 4-6 minutes in each of the rooms. I am sure there would be much more to talk about but they just did not include it. Well, the tour takes only 30 minutes and so more people can see (pay) the place. What I very much liked was the ticket system. Precise, ordered and controlled. You knew exactly where you had to be at what time - it was very German :)
To sum up, there are much more interesting castles on the inside but none as beautiful on the outside as this one.

There was scaffolding up around the outside when we visited. Not mentioned before we paid 13 euros and walked up to the castle.
When I say castle, it’s more castle shaped stately home.
No photos allowed inside. It’s all very elaborate inside with some impressive paintings and murals, but was never built to be a proper castle.
Buy a placemat with the view of the building and save yourself money.

I can only give Neuschwanstein 3 stars compared with other baroque castles in Bavaria. It looks amazing as you approach it, but the Wagnerian wall frescoes are pretty naff and the whole place feels like a theme park especially with the huge numbers of visitors and coach tours. It's worth seeing but it's spoilt by the mass tourism IMO

Visiting the castle is easy as long as you know what to expect. First, reserve your tickets before you come. You will get an email confirmation with the time to pick up your tickets and the time to enter on the day of your visit. We were at the ticket booth at 8:15am and there was no line and plenty of parking. We quickly got on a bus for a small fee and were at the drop off location in 5 minutes. Go to the right up the hill to visit the Marien Bridge for the best view. Walk back to the drop off location and then down the path to the castle. It's about a 10-15 minute walk, mostly down hill. Once you are at the entrance point there is an electronic entrance sign with the group and ticket times that are allowed to enter. Wait for your entrance time, once you enter you will be put in groups with a tour guide. The visit goes through several rooms over a few floors and then ends in the gift shop. The inside is nice and you'll learn the history of the building as well as lots about Ludwig. The size and beauty of the outside is the amazing part in my opinion but you need to get up close. We decided to walk back to the car and it was easy. Well paved and in the woods so it was shady. Lots of shops and cafes near the parking. Well worth the visit.

It's all in the pictures, really. Lovely place to see, easy to get to, as german public transport is a feature of its own and quite easy to get around the main atraction as far as souvenirs, food and beverage goes. You do have to keep in mind, though, that if the sky is not clear you wont be able to see the outside of the castle at all, which is much better than the inside. And during the summer, be prepared to fight the hordes of tourists around. Stick to low season and avoid going on a cloudy day and you should be fine.
