This popular Munich city centre institution serves just a few types of traditional pastries, one of which, the 'Schmalznudel', (a crisp oil fried doughnut of sorts), gives this great cafe its local nickname. I stopped here for breakfast one morning during a few days in Munich to sample the infamous 'Schmalznudel'... It totally lived up to expectations. Crisp, warm, dough with a delicious taste that can be eaten plain or with lashings of sugar. Best enjoyed with a Coffee Latte in my opinion whilst sat at one of the cafe's outside tables while you soak up the sun and the vibe of the city. A Coffee latte and 'Schmalznudel' will cost you around 6 Euros, so a cheap breakfast. Highly recommended and kids would just love it here!

Ordered the schmalznudel, the fried round bread with a sink hole in the middle and it was dipped into sugar. It's plain and tasted not too bad with the sugar coating. Crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Cost 2 euros btw

OK this is an easy review to write. This place basically does one thing in a couple of different shapes and its nothing fancy. Schmalznudel is basically a doughnut. They are fried to order and you forget the diet, throw loads of sugar of them and eat with a cup of coffee or chocolate or orange juice. This place has been here for a very long time and you can tell when you walk past as there is always a queue for people to take these delicious pastries away with them. We shared a table with a lovely older couple (over 80) who spoke perfect English and were thrilled that we were there. We had a lovely conversation which made these pastries even more delicious. A must on our next visit.

We had breakfast here one of the days we were visiting Munich. These are some of the best pastries we've had in our trips all over the world. Everything was so fresh and flavors were subtle. They don't have a lot of choices but what they do they do excellently. Very good coffee as well. You will not be disappointed if you visit.
