Location- you can't beat the Location! Driving into the city thru the gate is an experience and the cobbled streets ... you begin to wonder if you are supposed to put a car there!
Sunday the big heavy doors are closed- took me a minute to find the bell and a wonderful woman came out- and even helpped us park! The whole thing worked out wonderful!
The Night Watchman tour is a must! You can book a special thru the Inn and have your tickets waiting.
The whole place is very old but our room was in an added type area- the ceilings were a bit low which we aren't tall, very roomy room, with lots of plug ins for electronics- a separate shower area from the toilet.
Our room had no view- a few windows under the eaves- the lighting is very dim but firm bed and well working plumbing and we were happy!
The breakfast - I feel bad when establishments serve you things instead of just setting up a buffet. I am not much for yogurt so every morning I felt like we were wasteful- this is more a suggestion to the inn than a compliant, we had plenty to eat and hot coffee- cold milk!
If you want an authentic German experience I would recommend staying here - they have parking that is easy to get to and once road repairs done a bit easier. Hope to return again.
+++Also it seems as if PETS were allowed- hopefully those rooms are separate from the others-I am not a pet owner so it seemed a bit odd to see dogs coming and going...+++
As in most older establishments- there is no elevator but staff was very helpful in grabbing our bags and getting them upstairs. Doorways can be narrow- so if mobility is an issue you may ask and they may have suggestions-
Next time hope to have a view of the town from the windows...

Room Tip: Ask for room with view- or higher ceilings if tall

Visiting Rothenburg ob der Tauber had been high on our “must visit” list. We selected the Goldener Greifen because of its location and good reviews. We were not disappointed. The hotel is more than 600 years old and has been lovingly maintained. Our spacious and nicely furnished room faced a half-timbered house across the narrow street. The bed was super comfortable. We were warmly welcomed and felt at home immediately. Limited parking is behind the hotel. Breakfast was superb and was included in the price of the room. We found the price of the room very reasonable, considering its prime location, just off the town square. To describe the Gasthof in one word, “Gemütlichkeit” come to mind: comfortable and inviting.

Room Tip: Go for the large room that faces the street.

With GPS and their map we were able to drive right to their parking area. Could be tricky trying to do it without the GPS. Courteous check-in. We booked the Nightwatchman's Special and were not disappointed. The Nightwatchman's tour is entertaining and well done with humor and history. It's also fun to be out at night walking in the picturesque town.

The hotel is old and charming. If you want to experience Bavarian ambiance, great location and courteous staff, then consider the Goldener Greifen.

Our room on the third floor (no elevator) was large with windows looking out in the street and plaza. The lighting was a bit dim but we weren't in the room long enough for it to be a problem. The WiFi mostly worked which means if I signed in while in the hallway, my connection kept while in the room. It wouldn't always connect while starting out in the room. The breakfast consisted of juice, fruit, cereal, tea or coffee, bread, cold meats and cheeses with eggs cooked on request. Good German fare for dinner.

Would stay there again and recommend the hotel for location and charm.

Staying here for just one night during autumn 2017, I had a single room at the back of the building and had to walk along the side-terrace to reach the room door. The building is really old but well maintained. The bathroom is quite small, fortunately I'm not that huge to fit in :) . The outside view is the guesthouse backyard with lovely red potted plants. The building interior is interesting as it is a very old house used to be the city major house. The breakfast is really nice, with excellent service. Sadly the WiFi did not reach the room I stayed, so I had to move to lobby anytime need connection

Just driving up to the front door was a delight . We thought the Sat Nav had gone off on one when it directed us through a tiny narrow gateway but this turned out to be a spectacular fortified gate. Then the whole of the street (Ober Schmiedgasse)was one jaw dropping house after another. Free parking, just off the main square and a lovely old inn atmosphere. The Goldener Greifen was also once the Mayors house. Interesting to see where alterations have been made Our room was large and comfortable though don't expect the latest interior design . Our evening meal good hearty fare . Super staff . All in all you can't go wrong. We even brought back a little pottery replica from a shop across he street.
