We wanted to stay within the walls of Rothenburg and selected Hotel Spitzweg based on reviews and Rick Steve's. We picked a "large" double room on the second floor and arrived after 6 PM and found no way to get in the hotel. We rang the door bell and a voice on the intercom said she would be right over. A few minutes later a young lady arrived to let us in, direct us to the parking area behind the hotel, and give us a key to the room. The lobby is what you would expect from a 500 year old hotel, small and only to register and go to your room. The stairs, no elevator, are somewhat circular so the steps are wider on the right side than the left side so some precaution is needed when carrying 45 pound suitcases (3 - 4 weeks of travel at fall's end) up or down. Our room was large, pleasant with typical Germanic decoratively painted furniture. It had a small TV with no English speaking channels. The bathroom was modern, more than adequate and while all ceilings were lower than modern hotels did not present any problems and the exposed old beams added a pleasant ambiance. The room was just fine, except there is NO WiFi. Herr Hocher the hotel owner is a very pleasant, friendly, helpful, outgoing gentleman and directed me to another hotel a hundred yards away run by his daughter where WiFi was available, for a fee. The next morning we went to the pleasantly decorated breakfast room for a typical Germanic breakfast of meats, cheeses, cereals, fruits and breads - it was quite good. The town square is a few hundred yards away and easy to walk to.

In summary, we would return if WiFi were not an issue, but check in before 6 PM. Your stay will be more enjoyable if you remember this hotel is 500 years old and not a modern hotel with lots of amenities - it is the ambiance and experience of the old that is the reason for selecting Hotel Spitweg.

As an American I don't get many opportunities to stay in 500 year old hotels. This place was comfortable and unique with half-timbered walls and beautiful antique decor. The owner was very hospitable and rustled up eggs at breakfast for those who wanted more than the sumptuous plates of breads, meats and cheeses. Location is perfect, within city walls and a few minutes walk from the town square. My only reservations about Hotel Spitzweg are the lack of wifi, or any internet capability at all, and the lack of even one English language station on the TV. Also there was quite a bit of street noise in our room, which faced the front of the hotel.

Room Tip: Rooms in the back of the hotel may be quieter.

I know everyone has their own standards so I can accept the great reviews I see but I can't agree. The hotel was in the center of things and parking was handy behind the building. The breakfast served by owners was varied and more than adequate. The Cons: the twin room was up two long, winding flights of stairs and difficult to navigate. The carpet was very worn. The low, sloping ceilings in the room over the bed and in the bathroom caused me to bump my head and see stars more than once. The bathroom was modern with splash guard by tub for showers. The twin beds were very small compared to other hotels. There was no receptionist on site and had to be called by buzzer when we arrived. No WiFi. All in all I'd say it was a good value for the price but it was not for me.

Great place to stay!
Breakfast was an absolute feast for those that enjoy "continental" but rather dietary for those who would prefer a "fry-up" or even toast and marmalade!
VISA was shown as being accepted but on the day of paying our bill the "machine" was down so we had to pay cash. Mastercard was however accepted and apparently that machine was working.

In any trip to Germany, Rothenburg is a town that should not be missed. And the Hotel Spitzweg is one of the best values we found on our trip. The owner of the hotel is as delightful as he has been described by other travelers. We felt like he was genuinely happy to have us stay with him, our room was immaculate, charming (wood floors and hand-painted furniture) and ready for an early check-in, breakfast was delicious and included a wonderful soup and homemade bread, and we were offered fruit to take with us when we checked out. Put simply, we were treated like family. As mentioned, the hotel location is close to the town center, but on a quiet and private street. I would visit Rothenburg again in a heartbeat, and I would definitely stay at the Hotel Spitzweg.
