This is a fabulous building, offers a nice view from a higher floor. I learned on a tour that the dish outside was supposed to be inside but too big to fit! Anyways, the collection is good but lacks a top quality item that other museums on the island offer (e.g. Queen Nefertiti bust and Gate Of Ishtar).

They do have a diverse collection . . . the standard statues representing the epitome of beauty as well as mythological creatures, sarcophagi, burial urns, pottery shards, statues which had the genitalia chiseled off under Christian influence, sundials, as well as busts, statues and stories of Caesar, Cleopatra and Augustus. There are also other treasurers, the Scythian Gold from 500 BC found in 1882 in Lower Lusatia (a region in eastern Germany and western Poland) and the Hildesheim Silver Treasure from 1st century BC-1st century AD discovered in the "free part of Germany not occupied by the Romans."

There are two unique exhibits: "Dangerous Perfection" addresses the challenges of art preservation versus recreations which compromise history; and, "The Garden of Delights" which explores differing sexual attitudes.

As with many of the Berlin museums, the audio-guide is free and significantly enhances the visit.

Has a very large collection of Greek and Roman items, probably on of the best in the World. Unfortunately lacks that one thing that would be must see (something like the Head of Nefretiti in the Neues Museum or the Ishtar Gate in the Pergamon). Still a very good museum and located in a great old building.

This collection is found in the Altes Museum on Museum Island. Many high quality antiquities from Greek and Roman times are housed here even if there is nothing as in-your-face as Nefertiti's bust. If I could visit just two museums in Berlin, this would be the second after the Pergamon. Wear sensible shoes.

This Museum is located inside what I called the Modern Museum Planning Case study Starting Point. The Altes Museum was designed by the renowned German architect, Karl F Schinkel. He was also responsible for the Museum Island Master plan. When you walk around, there is also a memorial which is his master stroke of design hidden somewhere close by.
