Stayed here in November 2013 and was really impressed. Didn't expect much as was such a good price but the building itself is beautiful, very old but very clean. Room was basic but comfortable and the location was amazing just off Ku'Damm. There is a gorgeous old building right across the road, the Literaturehaus, with lovely gardens and a cafe and terrace. I would definitely recommend this hotel and would stay here again.

Position good because next to a metro stop and to bus stop for the airport, my room was clean and nice, the staff was kind and the breakfast was good. I noted only the absence of the elevator to get the 1st floor, but it was not so essential

We stayed at one of the appartments in this pension with our family. For the price and location it was a good value for money.
Breakfast was ok and the facilities were good in a basic setup.
The fact that the appartments are located in a way that you need to go through the fire escape from the pension did give a bit of strange feeling though. It felt as being a bit isolated

Spent 3 days at this hotel while rediscovering Berlin. It is located on the second floor of a turn of the century building. On the day we arrived, the lift was out of order, but management carried my wife's bag up the stairs, which was appreciated. The hotel has just had a re-paint inside and everything worked as it should, except for the (communal) showerhead which made up its own mind on where to deposit the water - mostly on the side wall. As not every room has private facilities, we had to share the bathroom with several other rooms, but as it turned out, we always had a bathroom available when we needed it.

Breakfast is good quality and there is plenty of it.

The room rates vary and because we arrived at the peak of the holiday season (early September), the rates were somewhat higher than at other times of the year.

Fasanenhaus has free Wi-Fi and that was a great bonus for us as we search for accommodation and book online everywhere we visit.

Room Tip: Ask for the room near reception which has its own balcony.

This hotel ruined our stay in Berlin. We had booked a Quadruple Room in the last week of August this year – for myself, my wife, and my 12 and 14 yr old children. We wanted 4 proper single beds (as shown for the Quadruple Room in the photo on the Booking.com website), but were given a Triple Room which had a double bed plus a sofa bed and a single fold-up mattress bed.

We had arrived by car in Berlin quite late, and, after dealing with the parking restrictions problem (due to not having the Umweltplakette), it was far too late to ask for the room to be changed (no-one at the desk, and no Quad Room available at the hotel for that night).

When we pointed out in the morning to the hotel manager POLITELY that we were not given the room we had booked (yet charged the higher rate for the Quadruple Room), the up-till-then smiling manager immediately turned into a cold, heartless man, who did not want to listen, who did not empathize, but just wanted us to shut up and pay our bill. We were treated in such a threatening and rude manner, my children felt quite scared. We even considered calling the police because the hotel staff of three men ganged up on us, and cheated us.

We wanted to cancel the second night we had booked because the room we had been given was not the room we had booked or paid for – but these men refused to give us a full refund for the second night, even though our booking confirmation clearly showed that we had not been given the room we had booked.

They made us pay 80% of the price of the room – a room we had not booked. When we said we specifically had not wanted a sofa bed, they told us that hundreds of people had never complained about their sofa bed and it was more comfortable than a bed.

Basically, they were unwilling to listen to the customer – instead they wanted to bully us into accepting what they had incorrectly provided for us. It was a horrible situation – at one point we were told by one of the men to get out of the hotel. They said, “We have your debit card details, we can charge you whatever we want.”

The sofa bed was not at all comfortable. It was a thin, worn mattress, and the pillow wasn’t a proper pillow – more like a piece of a thin duvet folded in two, very weird. My daughter had such an uncomfortable night, she was achy and almost tearful in the morning.

The hotel manager didn’t care that one of his guests had had an uncomfortable night – he made no apology for it, as you would expect from professional hotel staff with integrity who put customer satisfaction foremost (especially at these prices). He just told us that no-one else had ever complained…. Implying that we should never had done so either.

One reason we picked this hotel was because of the stunning reviews on the booking site (Booking.com). But now we have no faith in the reviews system – because there is no way those reviews are accurate. The hotel is described as ‘elegant’ – well maybe some of the rooms are, who knows. But our room was dingy and dark and musty – like a guest room in some old relative’s house that has not been updated or freshened up.

You can tell the proprietors don’t really care, when the wardrobe has old, mismatched, grubby high street shop hangers, and the electric fan you specially requested is so old it doesn’t rotate and makes a loud clunking noise all night. The bathroom was clean but basic, and the TV was a small, cheap flat-screen placed lopsidedly on the wall, hardly any channels tuned in.

One review said the breakfast was the best they’d had in Berlin! Well maybe that reviewer preferred their eggs cold, and the cheapest variety of processed meat and cheeses available at the cash and carry. Very small buffet area, everyone squashed up against each other…..

We had a hundred times better breakfast at the Holiday Inn Express Berlin City Centre – where we eventually spent the second night. Professionally trained, polite staff , the most comfortable beds ever, air-con, wooden hangers, and a fantastic car park – all at a cheaper price than the Hotel Pension Fasanenhaus. The latter may be in a glossy, up-market area of Berlin, but the Holiday Inn was much nearer all the important tourist sights, and just down the road from the amazing Potsdamer Platz.

Please take my advice – don’t book Fasanenhaus – unless you are type of customer who will not complain if you don’t get what you booked and expected to pay for. Even if you are polite, you will be treated in the most rude and unprofessional way.
I am sure the hotel staff of 3 men will respond to this review by accusing me of lying and being rude – and say they tried to be fair and offer us another bed etc…. if you believe them rather than me, well I wish you the best of luck.

Room Tip: Don't give your debit card details. Use a credit card if possible.
