I really enjoyed this museum. I am very interested in early Roman history and ruins so there is plenty to see and read about here. It is built on the original site of a Roman ruin uncovered during WWII. There are many wonderful artifacts here. Go and enjoy.

We booked a tour as part of a study trip for the South and East Museums Federation and had an amazing tour of the building in English. The collection is incredibly impressive and visiting the museum is a really good way to find out more about why Cologne was so important in Roman times. The mosaic is remarkable and the themed displays are very helpful in thinking about everyday life in Roman Cologne.

The whole museum has been built around the ‘Dionysus Mosaic’ (approx 30m x 20m) which dates from around AD 220/230 and was uncovered during 1941 when they started digging up to build an air-raid shelter! The mosaic is remarkably little damaged given its age.
There are a substantial number of Roman sculptures and ruins, ranging from small (perhaps 2sqm) right up to the reconstructed sepulcher of legionary Poblicius (about AD 40), which is approx 30m tall by 10m wide. There were also extensive displays of Roman glass, tools, toys, jewellery and porcelain type plates and bowls.

As someone who watches every Roman documentary on TV, I really enjoyed visiting this museum. The actually show a floor that the excavated in the lower level of the museum. If you like to see antiquities, this museum is for you. They even have rare, hand-blown artwork.
