Was a little disappointed with all the vendors out taking away from the beauty of the cathedral, but I’ve got to remind myself in another country and this is the way of live with small crowded streets. Still a beautiful church.

As with many of the cities of Europe, there's a huge central church that totally dominates the area. In Mainz, its the Mainz Cathedral or sometimes called the St Martin Cathedral. It's about 1000 years old and originally Catholic, although I believe it's now an Episcopal church. The most striking thing about the building was the appearance of a double chancel with two transepts...never seen a church with, essentially, altars at both ends! Very intriguing. We found it to be very dark and brooding, although it was cloudy and raining while there--so it never seemed to be light enough inside. Several very interesting tombs and vaults. Very interesting crucifix off to the side. Really enjoyed wandering through. Definitely worth the visit as it was more unusual than most.

Its a must see in Mainz since it is the biggest tourist attraction in the city. but that is it. Nothing especial about the Dom. Just like any other cathedral in Europe. I liked the red sandstone walls and the garden though.

The Cathedral was right outside the Christmas Market so we popped in to see the Nativity. It was lovely to see so many people gathered round it waiting patiently for their turn to take a photograph. No pushing and shoving!

The Christmas market was right outside. The cathedral. The nativity scene was cute. But the cathedral was beautiful. Love the opportunity to see the history.
