When we visited the museum, there was an exhibition of photos taken by a Belgian chap who had travelled over many months around the Mediterranean countries; superb mesmerising photos.

This museum was a lucky find, being near the Hotel Catedral where we were staying. Admission was free, the welcome was friendly, and there happened to be a fine exhibition on, which runs till Sept 18 2016. It was Nick Hannes 'Mediterráneo: La Continuidad del Hombre'.

These mostly large pictures focus on the people and places of the countries which surround the eponymous body of water. You wouldn't have to be a current affairs expert to realise that there is great contrast of luck and wealth - Monaco and Syria for example. There is some very striking juxtaposition in the conception of the art here, both within individual photographs and thanks to positioning in the exhibition. The far wall of the upstairs gallery features an Ibiza club scene and a protest in Cairo. Both feature people jammed together, many pointing upwards; one features no women; states of dress/undress could hardly be different.

There are also videos. One features Hannes discussing the work. Another features the sad irony of how many people in these countries which surround so much water, struggle for potable water.

I feel sure we will revisit this museum on another visit to Almería and look forward to seeing what it will contain then.

Went by this morning (Sun, May 24) and loved the two exhibitions, both done by women, one (Vanesa Winship) is a Brit and the other (Magdalena Bors) is Belgian. I loved the building, the free postcards and posters, the free entrance and the art itself. I see some folks are not impressed. I would think it would depend quite a bit on whether one likes whatever is being exhibited at the time. We liked both photographers. They are showing till June 28, 2015.

Really enjoyed the exhibit we saw!
Would not have necessarily chosen to attend, but glad we did, as we were walking past on a Sunday afternoon and nothing else was really open! Worth visiting!
