Very nice hotel with specific flair of old Spanish hacienda located quite far away of civilization. Very good local Spanish food in the restaurant in the evening.
We had problem with water in the morning. Water is provided by tank car. We had to wait almost half a day for water. No towels for swimming pool were available and breakfast quite Spartan style. So if atmosphere and silence is most important for you - go for it! Hopefully you will not have loud children shouting in the pool as we had. But it was just two loud Spanish families. It can happen!

Room Tip: Nice junior suite 105

A wonderful find just up the "mountain" from city center Malaga. This is a great get-away from it all location. Rustic, quiet, friendly and helpful staff, well-prepared food, (had dinner and breakfast) and a nice house wine. The sunrise, with the mountains in view, was stunning. There are 3 walking trails - mapped out, on paper and with trail blazes - one walk takes you by an abandoned mine. Good for one night to just gather your thoughts and relax away from the beach crowd. Listed as a 4-star hotel...needs a bit of work to gain that level of luxury from me. I will return if I make it back to Malaga.

This hotel lies lovely in the mountain area to the north of Malaga. The views are astonishing and the terrace is beautiful. The rooms are old with not all facilities expected from a four-star hotel, like a fridge, available. The swimming pool is excellent.

We found a lot to like at this rural hotel on the edge of the Montes de Malaga national park, but there are several things that need improvement before could recommend with confidence.

If you are looking to get out of town, this is the place for you. It's on the A7000, about 17 kilometers south of Colmenar on the road to Malaga. This is a mountain road full of hairpins and the hotel is well signposted once you find the right road. It is very rural, no towns nearby.

The road in is narrow and bumpy and leads to a very pretty old building surrounded by trees. Inside there are old paintings and quirky features which make it pleasing on the eye. At the back of the building is a spectacular panoramic view over a mountain valley.

When we arrived there was some sort of event taking place for a large Spanish party, who were having drinks and canapes outside and then went on to have a long lunch. They were also hosting a residential language school teaching English to Spanish customers. The problem is that the hotel seems to be geared up for these and less for the standard travelling couple like us.

The restaurant varied between well executed dishes and very ordinary ones. Had a couple of excellent starters, then the main courses can consist of meat/fish on a small bed of potatoes with no garnish of any description. They really need to work on their presentation.

Being right on the edge of the national park, you would expect some king of guidance on where to go for a walk/ramble. They did have a national park map at 8 euros, but the hotel was not identifiable on the map. What they need is free paper maps suggesting local walks so you can enjoy the scenery and walk in the mountains.

The staff were friendly, the pool was beautiful, the room was fine. The wi-fi was ok, if you sit near reception, but flaky when further away. It's just overall, they haven't got the details right.

Room Tip: A view over the valley at the back of the hotel is nice.

This is a very nice, small hotel - a characterful old building set in nice grounds, tucked away on a hill outside above Malaga (though the drive is bumpy and awful). The restaurant is very good and the staff are excellent - all seem to speak good English too.

It's the kind of hotel that would be great for a weekend away with your partner - if there's no function on at the same time (there seemed to be a wedding or birthday party on when we arrived, though it wasn't a late/noisy one). That's when the charm of the place would be all you need.

However, as this was a work trip the small room, without a desk, with limited power points and no wifi didn't score points.

So this would be a brilliant hotel for the right customer... Unfortunately that wasn't me. However, I would still strongly recommend it for anyone looking for a romantic destination for a holiday: as a couples retreat it'd be ideal. But for business travellers, a more modern hotel might be better.
