This place really has style and quality. Excellent, friendly staff and a wonderfully appointed building. Exceptional breakfast, good rooms and big (slightly firm) beds. 200 metres to the Catalunya Place and about 800 metres down La Rambla to the Waterside. Excellent location if you want the City Centre surroundings and good transport links. A bit touristy but this is what most people will want.
If you arrive after dark the place is hard to find, there are no lit signs. It is mid way between Catalunya and Liceu metro stations close to the Carrefour illuminated sign.

Room Tip: Rooms around the inner courtyard are cheaper. No view but a great night's sleep.

We stayed at Hotel 1898 for one night prior to our cruise to the Mediterranean in October 2011 after reading good reviews on Trip Advisor and cruisecritic.com message boards. We had been to Barcelona before and this time wanted to be right on the Ramblas in the best location. We flew in from JFK at 7:30 am and took the Aerobus right across from baggage direct to Placa Catalunya for about $12 American money. It took about 30 minutes and drops you off about a 5-7 minute walk from the hotel. It was easy to find right across from the birdcages.
The staff was very welcoming and helped me with my iphone which would not work and sent me to a phone store to get the settings turned on. The hotel was a small boutiquey type with a restaurant and nice decor. We upgraded and had a beautiful room. It was not real large but had all the fancy marble and lighting and the most comfortable linens and amenities. We could walk right to the market, gothic quarter, touring bus and feel safe walking around the Ramblas at night.
You can't go wrong if you want location. We would highy recommend it for cruising as it is a short drive by taxi to the cruise terminal. You don't need a taxi from the airport which is expensive.

Room Tip: we upgraded the room and spent a little over $300 but it was worth it

We stayed at 1898 for 3 nights as part of our honeymoon. The hotel is a lovely restored building with exceptional rooms, amazing service and a wonderful rooftop bar. At breakfast you're spoiled with a great fresh food selection and the nespresso machine is a nice touch. Our room was turned down every night with chocolates on our pillow. The pool is icy cold and must be chilled as it was too hot on that roof for that to be the natural temperature. Find yourself a lovely couch on the roof to set yourself up for the afternoon with a good book and cocktail. Our room also had an amazing tea selection!!! Don't miss that. The only complaint we had was our room directly overlooked las ramblas and it was really noisy til the early hours of the morning. I'd request a room that looks over one of the quieter side streets if you want to sleep before 2am.
A lovely hotel that's worth the investment!

You can't get a better location!
Hotel is in a very good condition, with great service, very clean, professional staff, very rich breakfast. The pool is a plus after a long walking day out.
Highly recommended!
Will definatly go back!

Room Tip: Get a room on a high floor

The common areas and rooms are stylish and lovely, as the photos suggest, but we were also really pleased with how comfortable our room was (great bed!) and the relaxed atmosphere in the lobby bar and lounge areas. The roof top pool was a treat, with a great panoramic view of the old areas of the city. We skipped the pricey room service breakfast, and instead picked up fruit and pastries from La Boqueria market, less than 5 min walk away.
