We stayed at the VE in Barcelona for five nights in March 2009. The location is excellent (two blocks from a metro station) and, being away from the main tourist areas, one feels more part of a neighborhood. Still, it's an easy walk to Placa Espanya and the Palau Nacional with its Museum of Catalonian Art. It's more challenging but walkable to get to Las Ramblas but the metro is so convenient that being a little apart just means that one can see more of he city.
The VE staff are very friendly and helpful (speak Spanish, Catalan, English and probably others...), the rooms are clean and quite modern and free internet access is provided in a mezzanine area. The hotel restaurant is decent. There are a few other restaurants in the area, notably La Scarpetta for Italian.
We made a point every morning of walking about six blocks east on the Gran Via to have breakfast at Escriba', an excellent bakery and high-end chocolatier with incredible pastries and desserts.
Our stay at the hotel made the trip a great success. I would definitely stay there again and recommend to anyone.
