We thought we had eaten first class pinchos in San Sebastian. We found this resturant by the off chance. What a suprise. This resturant was as good as it gets for pinchos. Between the five of us, we managed 54 pinchos. The resturant was mainly occupied by locals from Girona. I would recommend this resturant to anyone.

The Txalaka is actually a Basque Restaurant serving their version of tapas, known as pintxos. And they are brilliant. A real change from your ubiquitous ‘patatas bravas’ etc. Very popular (especially with locals) and decent value. Great wine list as well.

We came for the tapas but on arrival were told tapas is only after 8pm. Menu selection dia or a la Carte available at lunch. We were disappointed - obviously popular with locals and their dogs. Food was ok and typical menu del dia. The outside seating is just beside the overhead railway track and opposite a school so pretty noisy.
In our view not a daytime venue - inside at night might be better. We did no go back to find out.
Menu del dia was 12euro including half a bottle of wine. Daughter thought the chicken croquettes from the menu were good. Generous portions.

Perhaps if you are super sophisticated and have done it all before it's not such a great deal and would be a safe 4*, but for us, who can't get this in Scotland, and because many tapas bars are a bit disappointing, or more traditional in only having one or two dishes, or local and unwelcoming for ignorant non-speakers (like us). If you want to spend the evening with gorgeous good value wine, and a never ending stream of hot, fresh tapas at under €2 each, come here. <€30 for two. Buzzy and busy - thought we walked straight in and for a table for two, after that people were queueing.

I have been to many Spanish restaurants serving tapas over many years but this Catalonian restaurant in Girona is the best without a doubt. Wonderful atmosphere, wonderful tapas/pincho, wonderful service. If you want to try tapas/pincho in Catalonia go here. Cannot believe this great food was so cheap. Fantastic.
