Owner description: The Sorolla Museum preserves the original atmosphere of both home and study of the painter Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida (Valencia, 1863 - Cercedilla, 1923). It houses the richest collection of his works, colourful paintings irradiating light and vitality. It is one of the more complete and best preserved artist homes remaining in Europe. The garden, also designed by himself, is a beautiful oasis in the city.

It houses the work of this painter. There are a couple of large airy rooms initially displaying his work including his former studio. The paintings are good and give the impression (as opposed to earlier painters) that Spain is after all in the Mediterranean climate and light. After that there are some rooms in his residence furnished as they were in his time. On the top floor are temporary exhibits.

We loved this collection and studio. Great insight into the life of a great artist. Nice to spend a little time in the courtyard garden.

This gallery is really on a very small scale as this was the artist's home making it very enjoyable to walk around, without experiencing a cultural overload as can happen in mainstream galleries.
He was very much an impressionist painter with a delicate touch making a great play of the light and featuring his family in many of the paintings.
Not to busy when we went so its easy to take it all in and photography without flash is allowed.
Worth taking an hour out to visit this gallery and not expensive.

Well worth the visit - very well preserved home and gardens - takes you back in time and helps one to understand how the artist lived and operated.

Anyone who's an artist or art lover should see this marvelous smallish museum. It's the actual home of Joaquin Sorolla and his family, with many of his most famous works. He specialized in painting white: people in white clothing, white horses. The beach scenes are remarkable, and the photographs of his setups on the beach are amazing. Photographers like my husband will be interested too!
