Hotel rooms are small and dirty. Cracks in wall, peeling wall paper, air condition controlled by front desk vs room. Hotel is labeled as 4 star... barely a 2 star hotel in reality. Plenty of other places to stay... GO ELSEWHERE!!!!

We were here for 3 nights. All the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. It is situated only a one minute walk from the Opera Metro. We took the Metro from the airport only having to change twice (if the #5 line is open). Don't forget you gave to pay a supplement to use the airport Metro line.

The Hotel Opera was booked by us as part of a British Airways flights and hotel package and advertises itself as a four star.

Upon arrival reception staff were very friendly and got us checked in quickly advising us of the buffet breakfast on offer in the café which is attached to the hotel which I can’t comment on as we were room only.

We were told we were on the 9th floor and when we reached our level it was evident that this was the top floor, there were only another 3 or so rooms on the floor and a gym and sauna, which again we didn’t make use of during our short stay.

I must admit that we were slightly disappointed on entering the room in the fact that the only widows were Velux, 4 in the bedroom and one in the bathroom so there was basically no view from our room whatsoever unless you stuck your head up through the window and peered around. This is because the rooms are in the roof itself and as we were on a corner it didn’t just slope on one side it sloped in the corner too – a really bizarre shaped hotel room! I’ve noticed from some other reviews on here that some people on the 9th floor say they had Jacuzzi baths/hot tubs but this was not the case in our room, we just had an ensuite shower with toilet and washbasin – no bath. There were also twin beds side by side in the room with a small double bed, decent sized flat screen TV, a desk and chair with a well-stocked, fairly priced minibar and a wardrobe with a safe, small hanging space and shelving, there is no drawer space in the room.

The room itself was clean and decorated to a modern standard with comfortable beds and soft towels. The shower operated fine and there were no issues with water pressure or temperature and there were little kits in the bathroom of shaving sets, toothbrushes and toothpaste, comb etc. the only thing really missing was body lotion.
The bar is currently closed as it looks like its undergoing refurbishment which we weren’t informed of prior to booking although the attaching café is open until around midnight and sold a selection of drinks and cocktails at reasonable prices. I note a previous reviewer’s comments about the café staff being rude and their English not being every good. On the contrary the staff were very friendly and polite, their English isn’t at an amazing standard but to be fair that’s a pretty arrogant attitude to take when you’re a visitor in their country – do you expect them to be fluent in every language of every country from which they get visitors? This is Madrid after all, not Majorca!

All in all the Opera is a nice hotel and its location is perfect for walking around the centre of Madrid, there’s a taxi rank and a Metro station just around the corner too if you’re planning on going further afield. I would stay again but only if it was a room lower than the 9th floor.

If you want to sweat, book a room here. The lobby controls the air condition so dont bother adjusting the thermostat. The floors were not appealing and very noisy. You can hear people in the lobby walking and doors close very loudly so dont. Other getting a good night sleep. Too close to the main square so more noise. Will never stay here again. Aside from good location, still will stay elsewhere.

We stayed here last year and enjoyed the Opera dinner but were very disappointed this time . No opera dinners in August. On arrival reception was not very welcoming but efficient. Avoid room 704 it's opposite the lift and very noisy . There were works going on along the floor and it was covered with cardboard which was noisily removed on our last day . No explanation or apologies anywhere about what was going on . The bathroom had a glass panel onto the bedroom which meant the toilet and sink had to be against the wall together. There was a wide sink and the toilet was so narrow you could hardly fit between the wall and sink unless you are very slim so avoid this room if you are above a size 12 !
The breakfast is adequate and better the second day when the atmosphere was lifted by a member of staff who also works in the cafe . He made sure everything is replenished and chats and engages with people. There was some confusion over the bill which was a result of the way we were checked in . Not great communication. Don't think we'll return .
