We stayed here in March 2012. Very central. Within walking distance of the Royal Palace. Taxis are very reasonable in Madrid and we took them to the Prado and the Modern Museums. The convent next door was well worth a visit as was the Chagall exhibition across the road. The hotel staff were very helpful with all queries including directions to the nearest post office in the oddest of locations... the underground car park of the nearby department store. The bathroom was very well equipped... combs, razor blades and tissues as well as the usual shampoos and lotions. Despite its central location, and despite other comments, the room we requested was very quiet at night. Sitting outside in the evening with a glass of wine was very relaxing...friendly service and reasonable prices.
Cons: The sauna was fine but no toilet and no shower in the sauna and gym room was a disadvantage.

Room Tip: Rooms on the upper floors are quieter.

This was one of the best hotels I have stayed in, in any city. The location couldn't be better. It is an easy walk to shopping on Gran Via, Sol, Plaza Mayor, and the Royal Palace. Upon arrival, we bought a ten ride metro pass at the airport and that was the last time we used it. We spent 6 days in the city and even went to the museum area and Park Retiro twice and never used the metro. The hotel itself is located a block off a main drag, so even with this location, it is quietly tucked away on a little square with minimal traffic. There are church bells as others have talked about, it woke me up a few of the nights but did not bother my wife. Having a patio looking over the square and the monastery was well worth this slight inconvenience.
Rooms were large and very nice. Staff was very friendly when we talked with them. We spoke very little Spanish and had no problem. We thought they might get tired of us since we kept bringing back bottles of wine to have the bar open but they were very kind and ensured we even had nice clean glasses of wine in our room each night. Other negatives I have read talk about lack of or high expense of breakfast/dinner. I don't quite get this complaint as within 2 minutes walk in any direction there are so many places to eat a wide variety of foods. We had breakfast and dinner right around the corner on many occassions. If we visit again, this is where we will stay.

Room Tip: Room on the square was wonderful, even with bell noise (one time each day it was notieceable). Opene...

Stayed in the hotel in August 2010. Great location near stores, bars, restaurants and essential Madrid sights(the Poor Clares convent is next door, a "Top 10 "guide recommendation). The hotel is clean with spacious rooms and good bathrooms. I liked the reading room downstairs, nice place to relax after a hard day sight seeing. The old fashioned lift is a quirky touch. Couldn't fault the hotel.

This hotel is situated in a quiet square not far from Puerto del Sol and easily accessible from three nearby metro stations. The hotel is lovely, quiet rooms overlook a spectacular indoor courtyard. Staff are very pleasant and polite and the buffet breakfast was excellent. Many sights are within easy walking distance making the hotel a great spot for sightseeing and the sightseeing hop on hop off bus can be picked up in Sol square for a bigger view of Madrid

Room Tip: If you want to avoid hearing the Monastery Bells ask for a quiet room but you will probably lose a v...

Have just spent five days in the palacio san martin, our second time there, once again this hotel gets 10/10, for location, for breakfast and for the friendliness of their staff especially their new addition in the restaurant Barbara, she is a breath of fresh air to the hotel always smiling and very helpful, the location is excellent as it is central to everything, Valor the famous chocolateria is just around the corner and the chocolate churros are to die for, five minutes from Sol where most of the spanish hang out most days, ten minutes from the palace and plaza mayor a lovely place to have a coffee to have a coffee and watch the world go by, Take the metro Callao just up past Valor to Retiro Park which is only four stops away, a great day out and hire out the little boats on the lake, plenty of snack bars around the park. The hotel provides an excellent breakfast and all hot food is cooked to order, the toaster was not working but all you had to do was ask and it was not a problem, This hotel has great character and i will return again
