When i first moved to Madrid i stayed here because it was central amd cheap. Since then everyone who has come to visit me I have booked them in here. They all had a comfortable stay. It is a basic place but it is clean, central and great value for money!

Room Tip: Try to get a room at the back as the ones looking onto the main road can be a little noisy but you are going to a city so noise is expected when you stay in the centre of town.

awesome! We stayed in the front room on the 7th floor. Lot of street sounds which we loved. If you like it quiet stay in the back. The shower was great and having the restaurants outside your front door was all we needed for breakfast and dinner. Staff gave us good tips on using local buses. Cannot beat this place for the money.

Room Tip: If you like noise which we do stay in front. We stayed 4 nights and loved it.

The room had a balcony view from the 8th floor overlooking one of Madrid's main streets -- like being on Times Square in NY. The plus side is it is close to everything -- walking distance mainly. The down side is that the noise carries up from the street. The room was clean and comfortable but a little chilly. Loved the 3 euro single serving Freixenet in the lobby vending machine!

It should be borne in mind that this is a HostAl and not a HostEl by which I mean if you're expecting common rooms, bar crawls and 'companionship' this is the wrong place. It's a private accommodation house offering spotlessly clean, comfortable and affordable rooms in an excellent location. Convenient to Puerta del Sol (just a few minutes walk away) but happily far enough removed from the "Times Square" styled melee. It's located on Gran Via, (directly opposite the theatre where the Lion King is playing, in a stylish, old style apartment building. Behind it is the trendy area of Malasaña with it's designer boutiques, galleries and great bars. A short walk (or shorter tube ride) away is the stylish area of Arguelles with modern shopping and great restaurants for the well heeled. The Hostal is surrounded by theatres and just around the corner is the historic Los Mostenses market with multicultural produce, Asian grocer and Chinese restaurants.

Room Tip: Check room size. I had the tiniest single room I've ever seen but it was adequate for me as i was choosing on price/location.

I love the old-fashioned elevator to the hotel - Lauren Bacall should be slinking into it - it's a shame they never keep such things in the UK. The hotel is excellent value for money, and the location near the Plaza de Espana metro is very useful if you plan to visit Salamanca, Burgos, Segovia, Leon et al (all worth it ! ) as there is a line direct to Chamartin station.

Room Tip: If you're on the seventh floor, there's a biscuit / drinks dispenser on the eighth.
